earned income credit

posted 28th Jan
did I get that because I didn't make enough in 2012 or did I get it because I claimed my daughter...or both? If I hadn't of claimed my daughter would i still have gotten it because I didn't make much?

Earned income credit is for lower income working individuals. It takes into consideration up to three children when calculating how much you get, as well as marital status.

If your income was less than 13,980 , then you would have qualified for the EITC on your own. If it was more than that but less than 36,920, then you only got the credit because you claimed her as a dependant. Logically speaking, if you got the money just because you claimed her, that would fall under your agreement with him to split the money you get back from her.

*ETA the first amounts I posted were for next year, I changed them to the 2012 figures

Then you would have gotten the credit without claiming her, so you shouldn't have to share that part with him.

we just went back and redid it (to see what it would look like)...with me not claiming her and him claiming her...

and i didn't get the EIC without claiming her.....she said because of my age. but in the end i claimed her because we got 200 dollars more with me claiming her.

so since i wouldn't have gotten the EIC without claiming her i decided to just split that money with him.
