Poked himself in the eye
posted 28th Jan
Last night was night 2 of not swaddling LO and he decided to poke himself in the eye. He now has a broken blood vessel on the white of his eye. How long until it should be healed? Or should I bring him into the doctors?

Wow, that's a hard poke. No, he doesn't need to go to the doctor unless you think he scratched his eyeball. It takes awhile to go away, like a couple weeks.

I don't know how long it takes to heal, but I've done it before. No reason for a Dr visit.

Okay thanks and yeah it must have been a really hard poke but he didn't cry or anything. Lucky I cut and file his nails all the time. From now on though he will be wearing socks on his hands to bed.

Just curious, why did you stop swaddling him?

Bring him in so they can dye test his eye to make sure his cornea isn't scratched. LO did that, it was barely red and he still needed antibiotic ointment and an eye patch for a couple days because his cornea was scratched

For two reasons: 1 because he's 5 months and already 69cm tall(as of his 4 month checkup) and its hard to find a swaddle that will fit him and that he couldn't break out of. 2 because he was waking up at all hours of the night. Since we stopped swaddling him he slept 7+ hours both nights.

Okay thanks, how long does the dye stay in their eyes for?

Call the pedi but if you have anything for pink eye I would use it, per pedi saying its ok because finger nails are so dirty. I do, but that's me.

I took him into the doctors and he doesn't have a scratch anywhere on his eye. The doctor said he probably just poked his eye when it was shut. I told him that I asked you ladies what to do and he said that the advice you gave me was good advice. So I just wanted to update you and say thank you
