taxes and no social security number

posted 28th Jan
Ok SO was doing the taxes and the site I think its turbo taxes said he needed our LOs social security number which we chose not get....it takes ten days min if we can figure out what the hell I did with LOs birth certificate around here to get a card and with SO leaving for training very soon he cant file taxes after that and I wont be around either to do it as well
the only other option to not give LOs social security number was to get some sort of special tax number which requires we copy and send in LOs birth certificate our own info and all medical records from his birth till now proving he is our child and well getting those records can take almost just as long
why is it I have never heard of this before no other parent mentioned to us they needed their childs social security number to do taxes for a child under the age of one? did anyone else know this and we are just being dumb parents making an obvious mistake everyone else knew about filing your child for the first time

I'm pretty sure you've always needed the social security number for ANYONE on your taxes..

are you saying your LO doesn't even have a SS number or what?

We've needed Addison social security number every year. She was born in August 08, we'll need Ashers also and he's about 4 months.

Awhile ago you didnt need the social (i think 5 or more years) but to many people were just claiming made up kids since you didnt need any proof. Now they require a social security number. Both AZ and CA automatically send out a social security card when your childs birth is registered. I mean she is 1 and I dont have her BC but I got her social like 2 weeks after she was born in the mail.

That sucks.
But I can recall going to SS office and getting my DD1's SS card within 5 minutes. I don't think I even had her birth certificate at that time.

Yeah, it's common sense that you need a social security number to file taxes or to get claimed. How else would they be able to identify him? Why wouldn't you get one for him right away? We were able to apply at the hospital.

I never really thought about it because they automatically had my kids' SS cards sent to me 5 weeks after they were born.

But as far as I know, you need SSNs for everybody that you're filing taxes for. Otherwise anyone could claim anyone as a dependent and it would back up the IRS for months trying to audit everyone who claimed Billy Bob Jr as their dependent that year.

Here its a choice to recieve your childs card and since we have been moving so much I didnt want to risk it being lost and stolen etc. I never had to have my own till I was emancipated and I have only filed taxes separately once so it never dawned on me that this would be needed for my infant child it makes perfect sense why they would need it I just didnt think we did but thats fine its clearly supposed to be "common sense"...as for the other moms you all said you just walked into social security and got your childs cards that same day how did you do this? Also what if I cant find LOs birth certificate just in case I cant how do you prove an infant is well who he is lol Its not like an adult where you apply for a stolen or lost id and send in a photo id or whatever you have as proof your alive an infant has nothing so how does that work....now I am freaking out about to flip my house looking for it scared I screwed up my kids ID screw contractions screwing up my kids certificate etc. makes me have a way worse pain in my stomach thinking I could have messed that up....my parents lost my stuff all the time but clearly the us is getting smart about saving those tax dollars so I cant gripe just need to get my butt gear

I've never heard about receiving it the same day, but I had mine sent to me automatically. When I went for my son's name change, it took about two weeks for them to mail it out. I don't know if they would issue you the card right then and there but they might since it is his first time ever receiving one.

As far as the BC goes, you can request a copy of it be sent to you. It's like $25 I think. Or if you still live near where you had him, you can go into the vital records office and pay for a copy of it and have it that day.

You may or may not need their birth certificate. Just to go the office and ask!
And if you need the birth certificate, you can go to your county clerks office and get it. You don't need any kind of proof, birth certificates are public record.
Any now I am remembering that they still have to mail you the SSN card, but in the meantime they give you a temporary proof of SSN

I filled out the paper work before I left the hospital with my kids and got it in the mail within a couple weeks. I knew we would need it to fill taxes so when my youngest son's card never came I just took his BC up with me to the social security office and they issued me a new one. They gave me a document with the number on it and the actual card came by mail later.

The hospital that I gave birth at did all the paperwork for the birth certificate and social security card. We got a temporary Birth Certificate and all the official paperwork came within 2 weeks of birth. I never had to go to the SS office for a card other than when I lost mine and needed a duplicate made.
