gifted kids?

posted 28th Jan
has any one ever had thier kid tested. Ben is pre k but his teacher says it might be worth looking into gifted testing if he continues the way he is because he is extreamly advanced. She said he is at a high 2nd low 3rd grade level in almost all aspects. in those he is not as high in she thinks it is because they cant focus on those to teach them. He picks everything up so easily. they show him once and he knows it. i have never known a gifted kid before so i am feeling a bit clueless.

It also doesnt help that gavin is average. if ben is gifted how to i handle that? That would be hard to deal with. Gavin is so smart and he learns so fast but ben just leaves him in the dust. i find myself confused. any input would be nice

My brother is gifted, and went into advanced 'gifted' classes and they turned him into the biggest jerk- he thought he was so much smarter than everyone else, and ughh. I would NEVER put my kid in gifted classes because of what happened with him.

From what I've heard, pre-k is too young to really establish whether or not a kid will end up "gifted." They say 3rd/4th grade are the deciding years, when some advanced kids fall back to a normal place and other kids accelerate.

but he was much smarter than everyone he didn't just think that. My little cousin was like that, he just couldn't communicate well with people that weren't his speed

The higher the IQ, the more difficult it is to communicate and relate to other people.

OP my brother was gifted but not at that level. He was a grade ahead of everyone and in honors classes but it wasn't a big deal because it wasn't such a big difference. It's up to you on how to handle his education but as for his younger sibling, just don't make a big deal out of it. Don't use the word "gifted" - they'll figure it out on their own. And don't compare.

Maybe have him tested so you have that documented for future teachers, but I wouldn't put him in any "gifted" classes unless he is moved up and then STILL bored or not challenged. Most of the children *I* have worked with that are in gifted classes are very self-centered and pompous, and lacking in social skills. Let me repeat that- not all, but most.

My advice on how to begin handling it- Don't compare them to each other. Explain to them that their learning experiences aren't a competition with others, and that it is a personal journey. If your other child is right where he should be, I wouldn't worry to much about it, just make sure your attention is divided equally between them.

yeah she said that here if they still seem gifted in k that they test in 1st and try to give them some more difficult work and continue until they can really tell but she didnt say what age they actually consider them gifted. or what happens after they are considered gifted.

gavin isnt a younger sibling. he is bens twin. we work real hard to not compare.... and we are good about not comparing... but i dont know if they are gifted if they put them in higher grades how would that effect gavin? i dont want ben to negatively effect gavin or vise versa. grrr

You might want to consider not making a big deal about the "gifted" stuff to your gifted kid either. Often, kids who are praised for being supersmart end up not working/trying as hard as regular kids.

Success in life is much more about how hard you work than it is about how smart or talented you are. I know it's a balance, because you have to keep the smart kid engaged and motivated to work hard. So keep feeding his brain with challenging work, but don't fuss about how brilliant he is, because that isn't going to really matter much if he doesn't learn to do the bs grunt work that needs to be done in order to find himself in a brilliant career.

And since the "regular" one is his twin, as the "gifted" one gets older and maybe has more academic success, the "regular" one will find his own strengths in other areas. I wouldn't worry about that.

yeah ben is highly social and he doesnt realize how smart he is. he also doesnt realize he teaches gavin things! that is the scary part. he taught gavin to read gavins name!!!! last year. he has also taught gavin how to spell all of our names and to count to 25 (we got him up to 15 and then ben started teaching him after that. lol. its actually very cute and gavin takes instruction from ben better than from me or dh

I don't think they will bump a kid up higher than one grade level but I might be wrong. You could refuse that as a parent, which may be your best option. If you decide to bump him up do it ASAP so it will have the least effect on both of them.

yeah we dont put much emphasis on his smarts. he is a regular kid. i had no idea how fast he actually could learn until he got into a school setting. i just have no clue what a gifted child means school wise.

im not overly concerned about him being a well rounded kid. He is such a social butterfly. i think it is because he is a twin though. all he has ever known was people chatting him up.

Children can be the best educators to other children!! (this is also the same reason why they are sometimes really bad examples  ) It sounds like you have a good role model on your hands, I would soak that up!!
