Mothers who are good at saving money

posted 28th Jan
*changed the title because it doesn't only pertain to single mothers. Mothers who feed a family have great tips too ;)*

How many mouths do you have to feed?
Do you grocery shop weekly or bi-weekly?
How much do you spend each grocery shopping trip?

I need advice or something. It's only my 2 year old and myself and I spend about 200$ a week. I don't have access to coupons like the ones they have in the states, (ex: the shows extreme couponing where they pay like 2$ for 500$ worth of stuff)

How do you manage? TIA!

I feed me, my husband and my sister in law and go every other week and spend about $200, so about $400 a month. I just plan out meals for the 2 weeks before I go and make a really detailed shopping list.

That's a good idea. Do you repeat the same meals or do you find a way to have variety meals and still pay the same amount?

What all do you buy? I am not single, but I feed 3 adults and 1 child on a little more than 300/month.

I plan out meals and buy everything I will need for 2 weeks.
I make a list of items I need and do NOT buy anything not on the list.
We eat sandwiches and soups for lunch. Occasionally salads.
I drink mostly tea and lo drinks juice and milk and water. So we don't buy sodas.

$200 a week is a lot of money for 2 people.

We spend $100 a week for 2 adults and a teenager who is a vegan.

Meal plan, don't buy junk, don't buy food made & marketed directly for children, don't by pre-made meals.

We feed 5 and spend about $500 a month on grocery. I cook a lot and we eat leftovers some days, but we do eat out about 3 or 4times a week. I usually cook when I'm not preggo, just about EVERY meal. I do no use coupons, but I do shop at a high priced commissary. In the states, it was $400 a month to feed us. I buy my meats in bulk, and repackage them, fresh fruits and veggies, as well as some frozen ones.

I usually don't repeat meals in a month. And every month I try and add one new dinner that we haven't tried yet. And I'm usually within $40 of $200 every 2 weeks. (And that's with fruits, veggies, and snack stuff)

I do my shopping at Dollar General Market and spend about $50 a week (feeding 2 adults and a baby-led weaned 10 month old.)

I plan my meals and buy store brands.

We buy everything in bulk, especially meat that can stay in the freezer for awhile. We spend around $300 every 2 for DH, DS and I. We also have our 7 month old that is EBF so that means I eat his portion - altogether 4 mouths.

I've thought about going to Costco and buying in bulk but then I would probably end up wasting whatever doesn't go in the freezer because we're only two.

The trick to that is don't buy anything perishable. But all the snacks and things are great in bulk because they won't go bad.

We also get other necessities there - toothpaste, paper towels, diapers, shampoo, ect. We really save a lot of money that way and we almost never have to worry about running out.

*bows down* that is amazing. A little over 300$ a month? wow

I'm on a diet and I buy a lot of fresh fruit (so expensive here), and boost meal replacement drinks for me, and as much as I hate to admit it, I buy a lot of like fruits in a can, or apple sauce already in the little container and those minigo yogourts for him. I buy a lot of stuff already prepared because unfortunately I do not have the time to prepare meals or snacks ahead of time. I manage two businesses and there's literally not enough time for me in the day. I guess that's where all the money goes. I really have to put in an effort to cook more often
