occasional breastfeeding

posted 28th Jan
Ok so i tried to breastfeed with my son when he was born and he would not latch on so i gave up, with my daughter i breastfed for 3a days because i clogged in one teet and she was on my boob constantly left me no time woth my son. I am having another boy and would love to try breastfeeding again is it possible to only breastfeed at night and formula feed during the day. I really dont want to spend the money on a pump because with this baby i have to get everything as i got rid of all the baby stuff (my kids are 3 n 4 now.). Dont judge n please help me so i can give my son a little bit of that good breast milk.

You can try to do that but 1 will prob get engorged and not sure how long your supply will last...the more you ff the less your body will make because its all based on supply and demand.

Personally, I think it's a bad idea. A lot of babies will refuse the breast once they're bottle fed because it takes less effort than nursing. And it's completely normal for a newborn to want to be attached to the boob all the time, especially in the first few months.

i really doubt your supply would stay. I breastfed my son for a week, he latched good but only would feed for 2 mins and never seemed full. I pumped for another week for him, but i couldnt keep up with pumping as much as i should and my milk dried up after only a week.

That's a good point, too! If your baby isn't suckling, your body doesn't know to make milk...

Probably if you just bf 4-8 weeks first and then switch to nights only but you have to be losing milk, either by nursing or pumping, for at least like 45 min a day to keep your supply, some woman more some less. I only did nights once my son was 20 months old and kept my milk fine, but then again I had nearly two years to establish it... You could try

This will probably not work. Going long stretches like that during the day will cause your milk to dry up very quickly. Breastfeeding is a big commitment and if you're not even willing to do it during the day when everyone is awake, I doubt you'll stick with it at night when the baby is waking you up every hour.

You can try it but get your supply established first. They say 6-8 weeks but it took me almost 4 months to get a good supply. Once you do, see how he does with a bottle. But if you want to breastfeed long term I don't recommend it because like the other ladies said, your supply will decrease.

I am doing something close to the same thing and as long as you get up in the night to pump as well you should be alright - every woman is different thou when it comes to milk. My husband feeds in the night and I will get up and pump having milk for the morning. It's draining but if you wanna do it - where there's a will there's a way,

as far as not wanting to buy a pump... for some reason I couldn't pump with my first 3. but I could hand express.. so that's what I did.. long, boring, sometimes embarrassing process, but it worked...

Do you have kids yet? Your due date is in a few weeks and your post from earlier said you were having some labor like pains but you were sure because this is yor first.

Just so you know pumping doesn't stimulate milk production nearly as well as a baby sucking and skin to skin is how your body know what antibodies to make for the baby. Not nursing at night and only pumping will probably cause your supply to dry up pretty quickly.
If you want to have your husband do night feedings you should really stick to nursing for the first month or so (even at night) and then start pumping for him.

Almost there! Can't wait. And my post is from friend's experience, she's still pumping to this day and it's been 4 months or so. I love the idea of it all and seems to work for her well, so why not try it out?

I nursed for several weeks, then switched to pumping exclusively. It does seem easier at first, but it's really not. The time and energy spent on actual pumping... THEN you have to clean & sanitize parts AND bottles. It all became a big pain in the ass (IMO). Looking back, it was much easier to whip out the boob.

So true. I eventually gave up pumping it was just such a pain in the ass. Breastfeeding was incredibly difficult, painful, and challenging for the first few months but after that it was LOADS easier than pumping or even formula feeding like I did with my first.
