Another breastfeeding Q

posted 8th Jun
Okay, I know there is a thread for this, but there are 219 pages, and I dont' have time to wade through all of that.
So, I have been expressing my milk, and feeding my baby. She is five weeks old now, and I decided to try and see if she would latch on now. Well she did! But she only latched on for 5 minutes. How long should she be feeding? I know she was getting milk, but I have no idea how much! Any ideas?

Just let her nurse til she stops!   You dont need to know how much, she knows when she's full. Sometimes my daughter nursed for like five or ten minutes, and sometimes she would nurse longer, but as long as she was satisfied I didnt care. She'll be hungry again soon if she didnt get enough.   Thats exciting! Feeding straight from your boob is so much easier and more convenient than having to pump!   Good luck!

That's exactly why I decided to try again! I didn't think she would even latch on, because I have heard that most babies won't after being on the bottle for so long, since they get used to the milk coming so fast, but she did!   And she latched on correctly, and she didn't bite me!

YAY!!!   Thats great! She'll let you know when she's hungry again, so just let her nurse til she's done and you should be good to go!

Congrats.  Just let  her do it as long as she will.  If you really want to nurse, I'd say try nursing exclusively as much as you can.  It will help her learn to latch and she'll probably feed longer as she does it more.  Even if you have to do both breast and bottle,  you're doing a great job!

My daughter is 5 and a half months old, and she still nurses just for 5-10 minutes. Just feed her when she acts hungry! Don't worry!

If she is an efficient feeder she could take very litle time to extract all the milk she needs... I was concerned as my daughter's avg time is usually 4-6 minutes, but our ped said as long as she seems content not to worry

My boys were always 5 to 10 minute feeders. Any longer then that was just them playing around.

Lydia was a 5-10 minute feeder when she was eating every two hours.  She's spread it out now and is eating every 3 hours for 10-15.

Congrats! The exact same thing happened to me. She would only take a bottle, and at a month she finally latched on. She won't take a bottle at all now. I think it's so funny. She is so picky and stubborn like her daddy. Haha! She also doesn't feed for very long, but she eats fairly often. I know you must be so excited. I was. Keep up the good work, and way to go for sticking with it.
