Taxes... yes, another one...

posted 28th Jan
I filed our taxes today and I'm kind of disappointed. I was hoping to have enough to pay off one of my student loan bills and still have some to put back for baby expenses and maternity leave, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. It looks like we'll be getting back about a grand, and we have to PAY state. This sucks. I itemized everything I could think of (job expenses, medical expenses) and it didn't make a difference. What am I doing wrong?! I think what bums me out most is that my net pay as a full-time RN was only about 21k. Pretty pathetic, huh? I guess I should be grateful that we don't have to pay federal, too...

I was disappointed in our taxes a little too, but we are still getting a decent amount so I guess I should be grateful.

I'm really disappointed. People are always like, "Oh, you get back MORE when you're married." Bullsmurf. I don't understand how some people can get back like 10k. It isn't fair.

Maybe your jobs aren't taking enough taxes in the first place. I get them to take taxes off for me and my husband single but claim married so we get more back. Maybe see if they can take extra off so you don't have to pay in again next year.

We're both doing what we always do, so I don't think that's it. The only difference is we both made more.

They don't work

I rarely get more than a few hundred back for federal, and I've always had to pay state taxes. The one year Kansas owed me a refund.... 4 dollars. Woohoo.

Really? That is all you make as a RN? I would of thought you would of made more, but my mom says the longer your work as a nurse, the more you get paid. I didn't think even when starting out that they paid pretty well. I thought it was 25-30 an hour starting...I could be wrong though. I know after 27 years as a nurse, my mom makes about 50 an hour.

Thats interesting. I make a little less than you do but Im gettting close to 5K back. Did you add in childcare expenses, student loans and everything? Try taking it off of "itemized" and do a standard return and see if that makes a difference.
