Did you try taking the standard deduction instead of itemizing? Sometimes it can make a huge difference in your return.

did you qualify for the EIC? thats what gave us a lot of our money, that and DHs college credit

I didn't start working until August and made 15k or something. We haven't gotten our W2's yet. I'm serious. I would be looking somewhere else. How much do you make per hour?

There are two ways to file; with the standard deduction and itemizing your deductions. If you don't have enough deductions to itemize then the standard is typically larger thus giving you a larger return. It's worth a try.

I feel this way every year. Everyone else gets back $5-$10k and we get back like $1200 for a family of 3. Our income put us in a higher tax bracket or something so even though we paid like $8000 in taxes we dont get back hardly any of it. If we didnt itemize wed only get like $500. It reallt is disappointing so i definitely understand where youre coming from.

Did you use turbo tax? I find that they walk you through every step pretty effectively.

Also, a standard deduction can sometimes give you back more than itemized if you don't have enough deductions.

And it also depends on how much DH made last year and how much you guys were paying in throughout the year. If you were in their system as married, you didn't pay in as much as you would if you claimed as single and then filed as married at the end of the year.

You don't want to know... but I started my current job in May and I made 16k at that one. Pathetic.
