Post partum examination :/

posted 28th Jan
So tomorrow is my post partum checkup & I'm quite nervous about it. When you're checked to make sure everything is closed up is that done by hand or with one of those wretched speculum (?) devices?? I've always hated them & found they kind of hurt before but I had a huge baby & second degree tearing so I'm especially nervous about the exam tomorrow

If your dr's office tries to do a pap with the speculum tell them no. Its not recommended anymore but every 3 years and is unnecessary. My mw office didnt do it

I wish I would of known that with our first baby, but I found out after the fact. Fortunately, I had midwives with second baby so pap smear was actually not recommended.

So can she just tell if everything is ok without it? I had a pap at the beginning of the pregnancy, I hate those god awful things

Mine was by hand. Then they scheduled me foranother appt a few weeks later to do the pap. My exams always hurt but i'd rather have acfew moments of pain then catch an issue too late.

I thought the new recommendation was every two years. Did it change again?

Op, they should be able to make sure everything is healing ok without a speculum but some doctors use it for po check ups even without a pap. I would let them know you'd like to avoid it if possible.

Yes they can tell if your healing correctly without a pap smear. Basically they just check under your vagina lips, check your tear area, and what not. It may sting a little.

She should be able to feel your cervix with her fingers, no speculum, and she should be able to tell how your uterus is recovering by feeling your tummy.

My doctor used the speculum, but I also had an abnormal pap in the beginning of my pregnancy. So more than likely, that's why I had to get it done. I was scared to death because I had stitches, but it didn't hurt too bad at all. I mean, no worse than it did before I had stitches. But like TantricLemons said, you can always say no. And if they push it, ask lots of questions to find out if it's really all that necessary.
