When to switch to a toddler bed

How do you know when it's time for out with the crib, in with the toddler bed? Most people I know change their kids to a bed around two and a half.What are the signs that it's time to make the switch?

When they start trying to climb out is what I was always told.

This. A toddler can stay in a crib until he/she starts to climb out. Then it becomes dangerous to keep him in the crib any longer.

when my kids started to try and climb out ....i switched them but i used the beds that had both side rails that way they didnt fall out at night

My daughter was 13 months, and my son was just under two.

I think it depends.

The main rule of thumb is to do it when they start climbing out of their crib.

However DS is almost 3 and he has never once tried to climb out. He just sits there and goes "mommy mommy mommy mommy" until I come get him, lol.

However I think 3 is too old to be in a crib so he's getting a toddler bed as soon as taxes come in.

My kids went straight to a twin bed, both before 18 months.

My daughter HATED her crib with a passion, my son was climbing out at 16 months.

When they start to climb out or potty trained. I switched my son at 18 months because he was climbing out but i would have rather kept him in there until he was potty trained.

We never really used a crib but always switched them to toddler beds around 14-16 months old, mainly just to get them out of our bed

I bought it in 2008 and after three kids, it's still in great condition.

my son will be 2 on the 27th and i just switched his crib into a toddler bed today

My daughter is almost 2 and we just switched her this past weekend. She had been trying to climb out of it for a while but I was afraid of switching for some reason. But, she has done great!

I let my daughter sleep on a toddler bed after her 1st birthday, I give it as a gift for her.

i switched my son to a toddler bed a week before his 2nd birthday. I probably could have left him in his crin for a bit longer cause he never tried climbing out of it, but i figured it was time and he has done great with it
