birth control, breastfeeding, period

posted 28th Jan
Might be a stupid question....I had my baby girl 5 weeks ago. Now im thinking of going on birth control, and I was wondering if that would effect my breast milk and hormones of my baby... also if you get a normal period after the 3 weeks of birth control even tho I am breast feeding? I know it all depends on the woman. Every woman is different. Please no bashing its my first baby so any answer and experience helps. Thanks ladies.

There is a pill you can go on while breastfeeding. I think they call it the mini pill because it doesn't contain a hormone (estrogen) that effects your breast milk production (it is progestin only BC). Also, you can get a paraguard IUD (hormone free.) My experience with the minipill is that I still doesn't get my period until I stopped breastfeeding my son. Hope this helps.

I breastfeed & I'm currently taking the mini pill. It's safe to take while breastfeeding and has not affected my milk any. And so far my periods have been normal while on it.

Progestin only birth controls are what is safe to take while breastfeeding. Theres:

The depo shot(not recommended because the large dose COULD dry up your milk)

The implant(implanon or nexplanon) it goes in your arm

The IUDs(either the hormonal mirena or the non hormonal paraguard)

The mini pill(the ONLY pill approved because estrogen is not in it)

I think I will go with the mini pill if it is the safest
