re: Reducing Welfare for Families of Failing Students

posted 29th Jan
So making poor kids poorer will break the poverty cycle. Yeah...I'm really not seeing the logic here. At all.

This is the wrong approach.

Make parents accountable...not their children.

The US already spends more money per student than any other country, yet our education system is in the smurffer.

How will throwing more money at it help?

I am really starting to wonder what these people are smoking. If I were in AZ, I would challenge them if they tried to pull this no graduation for Atheists crap. Sorry, not everyone believes in fiction & they should accept that or go eff themselves.

I get the general intent, but this will NOT work.
Can you imagine being the teacher? I should ask the teachers i know about how they would like to be a factor in how much a family receives.

It is RIGHT to address smurffy parenting and to get the parents invloved, but not via this proposal.

I think some schools tie benefits to attendance. If you have kids that dont show up for school you can lose some benefits. i have no idea if the program has been xuccessful or not.

That's exactly what kids living in poverty need. Their lives don't suck enough. They need to feel personally responsible for their families going hungry and being evicted from their homes. They need to take quizzes and tests at school with a morbid, debilitating fear of failure. Sounds like a formula for success to me.

Who is coming up with these goddamn ridiculous policies?

And anyone who wants to deny atheists the right to graduate because they wont recite a line in a pledge that they don't believe in is a smurfing fascist.

For what? More failing students?

We are one of the countries who spend the most, per student. Why throw more money at a failing system?

EDIT: No, I think this is a crappy idea.

Why not imvest in fixing a broken system? Why continue to let schools and "education" suck?

Can you explain why spending more money per student than any other country hasn't already worked? Clearly we are doing something wrong.

We don't necessarily need more money to fix our schools. Some schools need the money.

But in the end... put more choice and freedom in schools. STOP STANDARDIZED TESTING. So much smurfing money goes to testing and curriculum to teach to the smurfing test... do away with that and BOOM! So much more money!

Choice. Freedom. Put the "fun" back in school. Creativity. We can fix our schools and it starts with the teachers at home when they are making lessons. Dont teach to a test, don't teach boring smurf. Teach things kids WANT to learn about, and they will WANT to do well! Its not a hard concept! Go home and make a fun lesson plan, teach banned books, make homework and lessons relate-able to life. Stop with the crap that no one is learning from yet we STILL insist on teaching!

I don't understand your references to "home." What do you mean? "Teachers at home making lesson plans?"

It's not an "investment". It's throwing good money after bad when a chronically failing school gets more money when they are already getting more than they need.

How much money per student, per year do you think it should take to educate a child?

And, education only sucks in some places.

Teaching is not fully the education system's job nor do all schools suck. I supplement my daughters' education at home. Their teachers will happily give me an outline of their teaching plans/curriculum so I can plan accordingly.

My girls are intelligent and it's been through work of their school and myself and my husband. If their teachers let me know they're having difficulty with something, we work on it at home.

Parents are just as important as the teacher in the education system.

Most teachers come up with lesson plans after school hours.
