she needs to look into what the legitimate reasons are, too. because i know there are some parents out there who think certain things are legit when they're not. i'm not saying a dying father is not a legit reason, but... there could be a legal limit on the time. i guess, obv there is if it's a truancy issue...

At my high school you were allowed three days for a funeral, no extensions, not exceptions. Is that truely enough time off to grieve your father?

The school he goes to is rich and stuck up. They don't care about the reasons and I am pretty sure if your dad died (not to mention our uncle dying a month later) you would miss time to. Do you think it is fair they punish a student for illness they cannot control or having family be severely sick or die?

Now a days it is according to people. But while dad was in hospice my mom took my little brother out of school twice during dads last days to say bye then of course when he died he was out for the funeral.

what does his mental age have to do with it? do you mean because he may be taking it harder than other kids would?... i can see how that could be the case, but maybe sending him to school would be okay. do they have a counselor he could talk to if he starts getting upset? at least trying to send him in after a few days would be okay in my book, especially since he needs to get back to his normal routine. sure, he needs time to grieve like anyone else, but... idk. maybe i'm not explaining this right...

She also mentioned in the OP something about parents not even knowing their kids skip school, yadda yadda.. so it makes me think other things are going on as well.

Yeah. He talks to his counselor and starts crying and she sends him home. Like what is the point in even having her there for that? I am not saying he is taking it harder. I am saying like high school kids handle this stuff a lot better than elementary age kids most of the time. He hands it like an elementary age kid. His mental issues are strange because he is emotionally that age but he is completing 12 grade work.

hmm.. idk then. but it's good that he at least tries to go. idk. death is obviously hard to deal with for anyone, and some people may take it harder or deal with it differently. idk what else to say. but i do agree with the schools on truancy for the most part.

This is going to sound really mean.. but that isn't the school's concern. Their responsibility is ensuring children are in class. Adults face the same issue in the workplace.... you're usually only allowed X amount of time off for funerals.

I agree with it but not when you have legit reasons for missing school.

And that's exactly what's wrong with schools. They don't give a smurf about.the students. They are so held back by stupid restrictions and government guidelines that they are not allowed to smurfing TEACH or show compassion.

There is a huge difference between adults and children.

You don't even think parents should be responsible for their children skipping school.
