drug seeking after giving birth?
posted 27th Jan
So my last two births were all natural, no pain relief at all, and I figure after experiencing that kind of pain, I can deal with the soreness and aches that come afterward. When I was in the hospital, the nurses continually offered Motrin for pain and discomfort. Which I never accepted. Apparently there was talk at the nurses station about my refusal to take anything, which my husband overheard and joined in on. According to the nurses he was talking to, they find it very uncommon for women to refuse medication after giving birth, and even said most are looking for stronger meds.
Really? I don't take medicine for much of anything, and I especially don't want ibuprofen if it's generally not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.
I would have thought with attempting natural birth trending in this day and age, wouldn't the same mentality apply for after birth as well?

Hell no I was so so relieved my midwife had homeopathic opium in her bag. I needed a laceration sewn and that smurf hurt.

You'd think. Anyway, ibuprofen is fine for breast feeding mothers.

I had a nurse actually get angry at me for refusing morphine for my afterpains after I had my natural birth. I was breatfeeding as well and was not comfortable with being out of it/it getting into my breastmilk.

Oh smurf no.
I was torn hole to hole. I got percoset in the hospital and a script for 30 days sent home with me. Life saver.

I think drug seeking is the wrong word.
I've seen a lot of women who have natural births (unwillingly) and are totally down for the motrin or percocet afterwards. I think they probably are like "ok, it's over why aren't the pains?".
Also, every subsequent child the cramping is worse.
Motrin is fine to take while breastfeeding as are narcotics... during the hospital time you are really only making a little bit of colostrum so much doesn't get transferred into your milk.

I was in SO much pain after having my last baby, not vag pain but the uterus contracting pain. It was sooooo sore!

Why does it matter to you what other women do? Not everyone experiences pain in the same way or has the same birth experience.

AND ibuprofin is very safe for breastfeeding.

That's because hospitals are rated on their "pain control". If they don't control your pain, insurance doesn't pay them as much.

I get what you're saying. I'm one of those people that doesn't take pain medication for much. I will take medicine for a migraine, and I took some pain medication for a few days after my son was born, but I had a section so...
A lot of people are really dependent on medication and will take it for anything. I'm not being judgey, to each their own. I've found that being the kind of person who doesn't take medication much, my pain tolerance is naturally much higher than other people. I didn't even feel my contractions until I was almost 8 cm lol. In 2010 I walked around for over a month with a fractured femur and didn't even know it.

Meh, I was told the same thing when I didn't push the extra morphine drip after my emergency C-section. They were shocked to come in and find that I hadn't pushed for the extra doses whenever possible. I also didn't fill my scripts for pain meds after I left the hospital.
My second C-section was a different story. I was 6 years older and my body was in a lot worse shape than my first one and I literally screamed and cried in pain when they came to remove my catheter and force me to get out of bed and go sit on the toilet. I was in pain and out of morphine when the nurse came in and said they were going to be removing my morphine drip from my spine in the next few hours, so I asked her to replace the bag and she just took it all out early and handed me a percocet.
I wish the nurses had been swapped-- The ones trying to take away my pain meds for the first C-section when I didn't need them and the ones trying to dope me up constantly for my second.
Oh well. I survived.

I didn't take anything with my first other than the numbing spray on my crotch (I had 27 stitches). My second I had a lot more intense cramping and I ended up taking Motrin twice. I didn't feel I had enough pain to need more.
