re: drug seeking after giving birth?

posted 27th Jan
Lets try to explain this in simple terms. You know how some people have sensory issues? We ALL have them to a varrying degree. They can determine how you process information Too some people a soft touch can be seriously painful, and too some they can't even feel it. This goes for pain, some feel it more, some feel it less, its not complicated. You can not apply your body to anyone else.

Heh. I was constantly asking my nurses if it was time for my next dose of pain meds lol. I had a third degree episiotomy and that smurf was awful.

How do you know that not taking pain medication has made your tolerance higher? Maybe your tolerance is higher and therefor you don't feel the need to take pain medication? Food for thought

I think nurses and doctors get really ass-backward with their speculation on people. I had an epi toward the end and they sewed my tearing up with that, but I didn't take any other pain killers later in my stay or at home after. I had a toothache and I accepted the antibiotic and turned down the tylenol 3 with codeine. I never really take anything. I had a headache for 3 days and my boss finally begged me to take something. I get a cold? I just blow my nose and try to get it all out. Smurf sudafed. I sprained my neck and I never filled my percocet script. I refused lortab for another injury because painkillers tear up my stomach. When I was in the hospital (same system) for mental health issues, I happened to get a glimpse of my file, and they had me down as a risk for pill seeking behavior. Go figure. I could care less. I wouldn't take pain pills unless I was dying.

Yeah, but maybe I'm right and you're wrong

Seriously you could be right, but I know that people can and do build up tolerance to pain. It seems logical to me that if they take medication for it, that would minimize the tolerance build up.

Great way of putting it!!

And OP that is pretty unprofessional of those nurses to have that convo with your hubs.

I was so miserable the first week after birth from my stitches (I couldn't sit, stand, lay or do anything without being in pain and crying) and I had terrible hemorrhoids. I was thankful for my prescription of motrin to take the smallest edge off. If you can do it all without pain meds, good for you.

Our brains ALL process information different. That is why people who experience it on higher and lower levels to the extreme have a "sensory processing disorder".

I'm not saying your wrong... just a different way to think about it.

And I agree, that is logical... but so is also having such a high pain tolerance that you don't feel the desire to try and cure it with western medicine. Also logical

Quoting LRX:" weird!"

Yeah I couldn't believe it, she even told me when I asked questions about it that it would make me spaced out and would probably make my son sleepy too since I was breastfeeding. She was nice before I refused it then was rude to me the whole time afterwards. All I wanted was a heat pack because that was helping so much until it went cold.

i literally had the exact opposite experience.

i had a c-section and was told that when i started to feel the pain from it to just ask my nurse for some pain medicine. i held out for like four hours after my surgery and then i could feel it. i asked numerous times for medicine and was told she was getting it. about 9 hours later, i finally got some MOTRIN. she didn't want to give me anything else and i was in alot of pain at that point. APPARENTLY they think that mother's that have c-sections try to get really strong medicines like they're druggies or something. i just kept thinking "i was just smurfing cut open and a 6 lb 8 oz human being was torn from that incision after they yanked around my innards... don't you think i should deserve some smurfing meds right now?" i was so pissed off. it wasn't until my next nurse that they gave me percocet and since meds were with held from me for so long, it was hard to get it back under control. they gave me shots of dilotted (sp?) in my hip after that. my other nurses were great and stayed on top of it... i didn't want to lose control of that pain again. i was doing fine with being in labor and i think i might be able to do natural child birth, but the pain after that surgery... forget about it.
