I think it's 5 years after the manufacture date. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE a car seat after 10 years. A friend of mine is a certified car seat "expert" at Evenflo and I think this is what she said.

Want to know whats more expensive.

A funeral. Because you are playing with fire and your kid could get killed if it breaks down in an accident. You aren't even supposed to buy used carseats and when you throw away a seat you are supposed to dismember it so it can't be used. I used my niece's carseat as a second-hand seat because I knew without a shadow of a doubt it was never in an accident and was properly taken care of. Even when you use a seat from someone you "know," who knows if they took care of the seat properly?

Really, you should never use a seat after the expiration date AND it's a stupid ass idea to buy seats off craigslist and such. You can contact fire departments and various agencies to help you get a seat if you really have no money for a seat. But if you can't afford a carseat, and have NO way to get that one item... you should look into if you really can afford a baby at all.

Yes, but you are saying it shouldn't be a problem if it is in good condition, because the seats are expensive. So... if the expense is your worry.... over safety.... then I will say again, rethink having kids.

I didn't really know that either, didn't know about cribs being used also, until i became pregnant and had to worry about these things.

Just google the car seat you have and who manufactured it. I'm sure you can find the expiry date.

In Canada the average expiry date is 6 years from the date it was made. So we are using my sons old one. But US has different regulations so I would check it out!

Hopefully it's still ok!
