If your kids' teacher couldn't spell..

posted 27th Jan
My 3.5 year old is in preschool. He is in the head start program which is a government funded, income based program. We pay nothing for him to go to half day preschool. It's great for his social skills, he learns a lot, and gets out of the house more. The problem:
The school has weekly homework assignments for the kids. They send home a weekly calendar and each day has a different activity. The assignments are constantly misspelled and improper grammar is used. I am big on spelling and grammar so reading these assignments drives me nuts.
Examples:
Practice writing your name. If you know how to write your first name without no help practice your last name then your middle name.

Have children help lay out there clothes the night before school.

They sent home a painting he did of a tree and the teacher wrote on it "fall leafs"

I don't know if I should call and complain? I mean his school is free I feel really bitchy for pointing out mistakes. But on the other hand.. It's simple elementary school English. If they are teaching my child they should at least have the basic fundamentals of our language, right? What would you do?

Im with you.. They are supposed to have teaching credentials even for head start so these "mistakes" should not be made by a teacher.

Ugh, that is like nails on a chalkboard to me! I agree that these mistakes should NOT be made. Like you said, it's basic elementary education.

Uhhh yeah, even head start should be educated enough to know how to use proper grammar and spelling. That would pester the hell out of me...

I would be worried about my child developing bad speaking habits if the teacher also speaks with the same horrible grammar.

I would definitely say something.

That would really make me very upset as well.

I don't even really know how to approach it. It seems so silly! I mean their and there.. Come on! That is not a hard concept to grasp! Jesus. I thought it might've been a one time mistake but its literally every week. I've corrected the spelling on it by writing in the correct word but nothing other than that.

Get a red pen and send the paper back with the mistakes corrected. This should show the teacher that you're paying attention to what she is doing.

I would call the school and let them know. Maybe schedule a meeting and discuss this with them.

Uh wow. A preschool teacher usually isn't highly educated... but an associate's in ECE is necessary!! A two year college grad should know these things!!

Public school is free too. Should those teachers be able to incorrectly spell simple words as well?

Please say something.

That bothers me the most. My DD knows better than to say that and if the teacher is writing that I would hate to know if they are talking like that and they say the first 5 years of learning are the most important. If that is the start of their education I am worried for the children being taught by this teacher. I would definitely call someone at the school and address your concerns.

Is there a principal or a director of the daycare center or wherever it is that this program is held? I would bring it up to them rather than the teacher herself*. Those teachers are required to have teaching credentials and degrees.   I would bring in examples of the mistakes and ask how your child is supposed to receive a proper education from someone who doesn't appear to be very educated herself.

Wow. That's pretty awful. I would definitely say something. I wouldn't want my children learning incorrect grammar and spelling.
