In several of those, my eye is drawn to places other than her belly when she really should be what I am focusing on.

Well a couple of those are just plain tacky. I would look up more unique poses and such at lest. What kind of camera do you have?

Tacky? They were mostly her posses and I thought they were cute. she wanted a natural setting. Kind of hippy. And A Nikon D3100

Oh I know I totally need to work on focusing.

like someone else mentioned just work on making her and the baby belly be more of the focus.. the top middle pic is my favorite and thats mostly cause she it 100 percent the focus. then i like the one on the right of it but think the tree branch shouldnt be in front of her but behind her instead.. thats all i can think of... for you first shoot they are great!

Maternity shoots are very hard to do well. They tend to lean towards tacky instead of artsy. You really want the mom to be the focal point in every shot, but you also want every shot to have a good sense of spatial arrangement, visual balance and composition unity. The one shot where just the mom's belly is on the right and the rest of the shot is grass, it looks very out of balance, like the grass is the photo, and the mom's belly got in the way.

Are you using auto focus? If so, you need to switch to manual.

And one of those is straight up blurry, so don't use blurry shots...

And the focal point needs to be her belly, there's too much background focus in one of the pictures.



I really liked the one on the top right....except for that bar she's holding on to. No bars either. lol.

I never use manual focus unless I'm in macro.





OP. Learn your camera. Learn how to properly expose, focus, and how to compose a photo. They look like just regular snapshots to me. Switch the camera from Auto to Manual and don't go back. Here's a good cheat sheet for beginners:

No they are manual. See, we liked the bar, with her belly poking through lol. But thank you. I know my focus is a big one.

OH! And AF points. Learn to utilize those.

I'm honestly concidering it if I can figure out my camera lol. Everyone around here is.. worse than me and they actually get paid :/
