Homeschool or public?

What are your pros and cons for your choice of education for your child(ren)?

My oldest goes to a public school because he has to. My youngest will go to Montessori which is in between.

I think for a parent to homeschool, they should have to go through some classes and evaluations first.

I feel public school is better for my children. I'm not currently qualified to teach children and if I were, I would not want to be the only educator my children have.

As a public school teacher who works with other amazing public school teachers, my child is in public school.

I believe that homeschooling, if done right, can be an amazing experience for a child. I have seen it done beautifully by friends of mine but I have also seen it essentially be NOTHING since the laws are so lax. I think there should be more regulation on making sure the child is getting some sort of education but that is just me.

I'm a homeschooler, but we will be involved in co-ops where my children will have another teacher (not to mention sports, music lessons, etc, where they'll have another teacher/instructor.)

I agree, I don't think having a child makes you qualified to be a teacher and I'm not interested in trying. My daughter is very happy in school like a regular child.

I also just don't have the time.

And, as bad as it sounds, I need that break from my kids.

Nope.

I think that is the biggest con to homeschooling as a parent.

I'd go crazy if I were you. For real.

I love my kids but not that much.

Honestly most of the public schools where I live suck ass. But that being said I think its very important for children to get an education in either a public or private school setting for many reasons. Not only do your children learn very important social skills by attending an actual school but they learn to connect to people who arent a part of their family circle. Not to mention the fact that most parents who choose to homeschool arent teachers and there for really shouldnt be teaching their children. A child's education is something far to important to mess up because your in a DIY kinda mood.

I want to homeschool so I'm trying to convince SO. I plan on getting a real and full teaching degree before. He is worried LO wont be social enough but we can do little league and all our friends have kids his age.

I'm talking with Chris right now to try to organize a more regular break for me. I want to have an hour or two every week to go someone and drink coffee and read my book, or work on lesson plans, or whatever else. He seems fine with it, we just have to figure out the day.

Actually, there are many homeschooling co-ops that include certified teachers working in an informal setting.

The homeschooling co-op I work with is 65 families from various socio-economic, religious and ethnic backgrounds.
