Light a candle today....

posted 27th Jan
Take a moment out of your day to remember the people who were liberated from Auschwitz on this day in 1945, to honour those who lost their lives in the name of hatred and ignorance and to recognize International Holocaust Memorial Day.

The memories are something we must preserve whether you are interested in history or not. It is a part of our history as humans, not just individual groups.

Here is a link to the museum at Auschwitz-Birkenau for some reading:

It's definitely something you will never forget....if you ever have the money/time to do it you definitely should. We stood in one of the actual train cars they used to transport hundreds of people in. IT was horrifying.

There will be no Holocaust survivors alive to tell their stories by the time this upcoming generation is having children.

In 2012, there were about 500,000 survivors living around the world, however because of their age they are all dying rapidly. For example, in the last 5 years, the number of Holocaust survivors living in New Jersey went from 5000 to 2000.

These are stories we need to share with our children and grandchildren. This part of human history is being removed from curriculums across Canada and the U.S. to make room for things deemed to be "more important".

It's sad.

It is.

And even more sad that some people still don't acknowledge that it really happened.

Thats another reason Im SO grateful I got that experience. The two people we met were siblings, both had heavy accents, but they were just as sweet and humbled as could be.
