re: Letting kids play outside unsupervised

posted 27th Jan
this is the only picture i could find showing most of what the yard looks like... but thats the privacy fence. only time i wont allow him to be out there alone is if hes playing in his pool cuz i get so paranoid something would happen even though its not deep. ive never seen any snakes or anything back there. besides the usual birds squirrels and moles

That's an awesome looking yard. The grass is so pretty, lol! Our grass is pitiful.

I can't remember exactly how young i was, but definitely from age 7 we were allowed to play outside together to certain point on our street with the other kids that lived on the street. My 3 year old is allowed out in the yard, they are pretty small and have a fence all the way round. Our yard is all one level, my moms yard has several different levels with lots of water features and rocks and things so i still supervise there.

My kids are 5 and 3 and I let them out in the back yarf alone if I am next to te window where they play. Out in the front- no way in hell. Not until they are maybe 7 ( usually the neighbor boy is out there, he is 8 and very good to the kids)
It will be when they can understand to watch for cars and such. Around 9 I will let them out with a little less restrictions

My son isn't even 2 yet, but so long as we live where we do now- I don't know that I'll let him play unsupervised for a very long time, depending on his maturity level. For at least the last year, in Spokane, we haven't been able to 48 hours with some kind of violent act (mostly stabbings, but for a while people was running around with axes or hammers) and we can't more than a few days without a shooting. So that's why.

But if we lived in the middle of no where, like I did growing up, if we had a fenced area, he'd probably be allowed to play by the age of 3 without supervision.

When we were growing up, 5 is when we were allowed to roam about our 5 acres. As long as we stayed within hearing distance of our Mom yelling, and we weren't allowed to not answer if she yelled. Even if we were playing hide and seek, and it would totally give our position away (HAHA! I still remember being pissed every time that would happen! LOL)

No I do not. She's 12 with a D cup and there are teens being snatched off the streets in our city.
We live in the second biggest city in our state, so yes, pretty urban. Our actual neighborhood is ok, but a really smurffy horrible part of town is less than three blocks away.
I'd have to lock her out of the house to get her to play outside at home anyways. Unless we're at a park, she's at school recess or she's with her weekly group, she has no interest in the outdoors :-\

We live outside of town now in our new home, on a big plot of fenced land. My older 2 (4 and 5) can go anywhere they please inside the property as long as they stay away from water sources that could be over their head. Youngers (3, 3, and 18mos) stay in the fenced garden, but largely unattended, as there's nowhere for them to go and nothing for them to get into.

I was around 5 or 6 when I could play outside alone, I wasn't allowed to cross the street or go more than 3 houses down either way.

Until we move I would not let my kids play outside alone. Saw a copperhead in our backyard once. Oh heck no. And then they'd have to be at least 7 to play in backyard alone, probably 9 in front yard, but that would all depend on the neighborhood and if there are sidewalks.

My kids are 9&7. We are in a low crime community and I know most of my neighbors. They are allowed to go to their friend's homes which are on each side of my house and two homes down, across the street to another friend's house. All of us moms keep an eye on the kids while they're playing through our windows so they aren't totally unsupervised.
