ages for bunk beds?

posted 27th Jan
I'm just curious whats a good age to give toddlers bunk-beds. I have 2 boys who share a room, ages 3 and 1. This coming summer SO and I were thinking of redoing their room and I saw this wicked cute bunk-bed thing with a tractor theme. I know my boys would go nuts over this. Our youngest will be 2 the end of the summer and would be going into a toddler bed then anyways and our oldest will be almost 4 at that point too. He's a very active boy, they both are, started their mobile skills pretty early on I think and have mastered climbing things like stairs and ladders at the playgrounds. The bunk-beds will have raised sides like bed rails and I'm hoping to get them low, like miniture bunk-beds with the bottom bed on the floor and the top not as high up as a normal bunk-bed would be. What do you ladies think?

My kids are 4-1/2 and almost 3 and they are in a bunk bed, but I got a twin over full and they mostly just sleep on the full bed at the bottom together.

SO and my Dad are thinking about building them the bunk-beds cause they're both handy like that and have experience with carpentery. I was thinking space wise we'd do just twin beds to get them more room to play in the bedroom cause we're expecting baby 3 and their room is also going to be the "play room" with all the toys in it. Thinking more now though I bet they'd love to sleep next to each other some nights in the bigger space.

When we get taxes back we are getting bunk beds for our girls they are 4 1/2 and 2. I think it depends on your child and how you think they will do with it. We are getting one from IKEA because its only 48in tall. So its shorter than me. I can get my odlest out of it and they can't reach the fan

I haven't looked much into stores and buying one. I saw the tractor themed one on pinterest and imediately asked SO and my father if they could build something like that but shorter.

My kids are 10.5 yrs old and 4.5 yrs old, my middle (4yr old) has been on the top bunkbed since she was a little over 2 yrs old.

My oldest is too heavy for the top, she sleeps down below.

Depending on the toddler, mine has been on the top since 2 yrs old, now 4 and never fell or anything and we dont use the ladder at all, she just monkey climbs, we never used the ladder, it didnt fit. lol

Too heavy? My friend has bunk beds at her parents house and we've slept on the top together, I'm 115lbs and she's 100lbs lol. I didn't know there was a weight limit?

I think it depends on the child honestly. My two year is a pro climber and because the bed we are going to get is short im not even worried about them on it.

I think it probably all depends on the bunk bed

Ya wiegt limit on ours is 120lbs, she is exactly 120lbs.

ETA, if metal they hold more, beleve it or not...wood ones have a limit, ours is a big bunk set and its 120 max on the top.

My boys are 3(almost 4) and 2 and we have had bunk beds for about 6 months. Initally my oldest was unsure about sleeping on the top bunk so the boys would end up sleeping in the bottom bunk together. I let my 3 year old start sleeping up top when he felt ready and loves it. It is a great way to save space in the room!

Both of my boys are VERY active but we have taught them not to play on the top bunk especially if a parent is not in the room and so far we have had no falls

I just hope my oldest listens when we say no playing around up top. I know our youngest wouldn't be able to even make it up there quite yet, he's active and all but he's a bigger kid (17 months and 33lbs) so it takes him a lot more effort to climb on the couch and stuff :p I mean worse comes to worse I guess we could always try it and if it doesn't work we can take it down pack it away and save it for the following summer and they can go back to their toddler beds.
