what do i do?

My son is in speech therapy. His therapist is on maternity leave and has been since like December 1st. They were supposed to have found a replacement for her during this time but have failed to do so. I keep calling and the secretary just gets mad at me and tells me they haven't found anyone yet.

What do I do? Settle for this answer because maybe they are short staffed, or call the IU headquarters and let them know and ask for them to find someone? I don't think its fair to my son to miss out on two months of sessions BC no one wants to take her schedule.

I'd definitely call. They should have had someone to replace her. Or if they're not going to have someone take over, they shouldn't be stringing you guys along like that. That's not fair to your son.

Sadly, there isn't much you can do.

My sons OT went on maternity leave last year, and they didn't find a replacement until a couple months before the end of the school year. I called and called, and there was no available OT's to take her place.

Does he have any other forms of therapy? You could always tell them, and they could try to work on it as well. Or you could always look up speech exercises you could do as well.

No, he's only in speech. I just feel bad. He has blossomed so much in the last two months that I wonder how much more he could have progressed seeing her during this time. We try to do speech related things, but you know kids are less into doing those things with their parents.

I know. It's a struggle. When my sons OT went out, his behavior changed drastically. He gets PT/OT/Speech/ and Vision, and the SLIGHTEST kink to the routine and he's just a different person.

How old is he? Could someone in your family help you? Like do the exercises? Or a friend maybe?

I would call and press the issue. They may not be able to find anyone but there's no harm in trying. I know when DS misses a week of his therapy he regresses a lot....I can't imagine a month or 2.

He is 4. Not really because he just loves to play around. He will sit for a fee minutes to donit, but then starts making jokes of it.

They probably don't have anyone to take him within their practice. We waited 2-3 months before they had an opening for my son. Its pretty standard to be on a waiting list though im not sure why they didnt find someone to take over her patients since they knew she was going on leave. Do you have the option to call other places and see if they have openings? I'm not sure how your insurance works but with ours we had several options to choose from, if we wanted to switch we just call our insurance and have the new place put down as our new provider. I'd make sure they have openings at any new place before switching though.

No I don't think we can change places. I'm not sure if they are all independent contractors working through the IU, but all of our stuff is done through the IU. I wouldn't even know of a different place to go through. Maybe I'll just call them tomorrow (the headquarters) and see what's up. I told my mom - she's familiar with some IU stuff - and she said they may not even be aware that no one took her place and that they aren't upholding the IEP that was signed if he's not getting services.
