Cutting the cord?

posted 26th Jan
With DD they cut her cord right away, didn't even ask if DH wanted to do it. And nothing was wrong. They took her straight away to clean her, didn't even lay her on my chest first.

So my question is, next time can I tell them I don't want them to cut the cord right away? Or will they even do that in a hospital? Would I have to go to a birthing center?

Tell them. I kept reminding them about stuff like that during labor. By the time dd was born I'm sure they were just like give her what she wants so she shuts up. My hospital did exactly what I wanted. I held her skin to skin then dh cut her cord. I got my stitch while they cleaned her up.

They set Eli right on my chest and my ex cut his cord. They took him right after that because thanks to them letting me labor with my water broken for 48 hours we both had a fever when he was born.

Next time talk to your ob and see what there normal practice is the request the delayed cord cutting and the holding if the babe right after birth . See how the ob reacts to the request that will tell you how willing they are to go off the norm. You don't have to go to a birth center though many hospitals and doctors are a
Starting to delay the cord clamping and even more allow you to hold your baby for awhile before taking them for there checks. My advice is educate yourself on all the benefits of these practices so that you have some knowledge to throw back at the doctor should you need to.

You will just have to be vocal about your wishes. It is generally said your desires and wishes are more respected at birthing centers since they usually work for their customers, they dont try to make you listen to them.

I will definitely talk to them more about it next time. The problem is the hospital I go to has 10 different OBs, so even if I see the same one my whole pregnancy it's not guaranteed they will deliver the baby.

Then I would do what one mama said and just keep reminding them during labor of your wishes. Drive them nuts with you wishes that way you know . Your ob should be able to tell you if its hospital procedures or just his .

I would write a birth plan. Nothing to extensive just the key points so you can give that to your nurse and doctor when you go in. With my second they put her right on my chest, delayed cord clamping/cutting under the cord had stopped pulsing. They did her apgar on my chest and other than that no doctor or nurse touched her for the first two hours. I nursed and cuddled and so did DH for that time.

That's basically what I want. I'm still upset how DD's birth went.   I LOVED the doctors and nurses and the hospital but hated how things went. My water broke so they wouldn't even let me out of bed to walk around. He used forceps without telling me, and the other thing kind of like a spatula (forgot what it's called) and then they cut DD's cord and took her away. Ugh.
