A rant about labour pain conversations

posted 26th Jan
I've already had this out with a few guys on my FB page but I'd like to hear what you folk think.
If a couple of women are chatting about childbirth and the pain they felt during labour/birth etc, most men present will usually say something like "I'd like to see how a woman would cope if she could feel what it's like to be kicked in the balls!"
Now I am pretty sure that a kick in the balls is horrific and truly painful but why is this almost every man's 'go-to-comment' when people are talking about labour pain? IMO it's so not even relevent to the conversation. Whenever I have spoken about my labour pain I have never assumed a man couldn't go through it. I'm sure many men could and would, so why is it some kind of pain competiton to guys?
One guy on my fb said a kick in the balls must be worse than childbirth because men never ask for another kick whereas women often want 2 or 3 or more babies. My argument to that is it's not even comparable as there's no amazing reward after a kick in the balls yet the baby you get after labour is the best reward ever and makes ANY pain worth repeating.
Several guys then went on to list a few things they thought may be more painful than labour/birth....... but why? If a friend of yours was talking about a bad injury they had a year ago and how painful it was you wouldn't point out many things that would be worse, so how come guys like to try and 'out-pain' labour when women talk about it. Can't they just say "Yeah I bet it hurts like hell" and leave it at that?
It basically stemmed from a video I saw on fb of 2 dutch guys trying out this new machine that simulates the pain you get during labour. many of the comments under the video were along the lines of "I wish there was a machine to make women feel how bad a kick in the balls is".....again why? Of what use would that machine be? A machine to let men feel what their partner is going through is useful so they can share it. A machine to let women know how a kick to the balls feels is just stupid. A woman does not expect her man to get kicked in the balls for her yet most men expect their partner to bear their children and birth them at some point during their life. So it's only fair that they have the opportunity to feel that too seeing as they also want that baby.

(I'm neither for or against this machine thingy btw)

I get annoyed to but what do ya do? There was a similar conversation on my facebook where a girl was siding with the men aswell. Saying she had a baby and it wasn't that bad (mind you she had a c-section) not saying a c-section isn't painful but you're also not pushing a baby out of your vagina. It thinks its a pointless argument cause they are definitely not comparable IMO.

I haven't read it yet but does this stem from the status the other day and how sitting on their balls is worse than labor? lol

In our highschool bio class we learned that on average the pain a woman feels during an unmedicated labor is similar to the pain a man would feel if his scrotum was stretched over his head. The info came from a study done in Asia somewhere. Kinda puts the kick in the balls theory to rest.

I personally think it's an ego thing. A man could never give birth. It's an amazing thing only a woman can do, and the species couldn't continue without a womb. It hits some deep, primal level in them.

Plus I kind of believe men are subconsciously scared of women and that's where most belittlement stems from.

Idiots.
Labor isn't just a single pain, and then it's done. Contractions are recurring. It's not comparable to being kicked in the balls.
Labor is comparable to being kicked in the balls, several times, over a period of of several hours, culminating in one gigantic pain (pushing out the baby).

I'm sure the pain from getting kicked in the balls to away within seconds. Women labor for hours it is funny tho when they try to compare the two.

Exactly.
It's not really the level pain that distinguishes labor from being kicked in the balls. It's the fact that with labor the pain keeps recurring and intensifying over hours or sometimes days. That's like comparing the pain of being punched once to the pain of someone beating the smurf out of you.

I agree with you all.
I don't expect a medal for giving birth but I reserve my right to feel proud of it. It is painful and long and tiring and after a rather uncomfortable 9 months too so dam right women should feel proud. I have never thought that men as a whole couldn't take the pain of labour but I do know individual men who for sure would crumble and sob.
Also each labour is different. Some women breeze through theirs, some don't. I have a friend who has 3 kids and all 3 labours were over and done with in less than 90 minutes each!!!!! (JEALOUS!!)
I also have another friend with 3 kds and 2 of those labours went on for 4 days and both resulted in life and death situations and emergency c -sections. (her 3rd baby was a pre booked c section)
My labour I can honestly say was ok until the actual birth. I found the contractions painful but managable. During the actual birth my daughter (who was only 6lb 7oz and with a smaller than average head) somehow split my vagina into my ass!! Took 3 reconstructive surgeons forever to rebuild my vag (while I was awake with no anaesthetic I might add) That bit was worse than the labour itself.
You just can't compare your pain with other people's pain as pain is subjective to the person going through it.
