Question about my 4 year old.

posted 26th Jan
Because its a Saturday and I can't call our dr I thought I would post this on here and see if others have ever had to deal with this or have any help or suggestions for me. Over the last year we have start to be concerned about our 4 year old son who seemed to be having trouble with his colors. We had him checked and he wasn't color blind so we figured we just need to spend more time with him on it. He started Pre-school and mentioned it to his new teachers and they said they would work with him on it. This week his teacher came up to me and said that she was starting to be concerned too and wanted to bring in someone else to oberserve him and come up with some other ways to help him. His teacher said he can match them fine but can't look at a color and tell her what it is, which is what I have noticed to. If I start to sound out the name of the color he will tell me what it is. Today I noticed this with his letters as well. I could say the letter and he would copy me or I would start to sound it out and he will tell me. I asked him if he knew what it was just couldn't say it and he said yes. That's when I started to get a little concerned that he knows it (always new that he knew what it was) but just can't seem to be able to say it. Could this be a medical thing? Do I need to be concerned? Any help would be appreciated. I will probably set him up with a consult with his dr too. Thanks

how do they know he is not color blind? if he can't say the colors, then how did he identify them?....

i guess the doctor is one person to ask, but i'm not sure if they can help it. it could be a cognitive thing that they may suggest a specialist for.

does he have trouble with speech? is his vocabulary where it should be?

I would take him to the doctor. It could be a learning disability.

To MammaNoodle: We took him to a eye dr and the show him cards that have a couple different colors on it, a main color and a letter in the middle in a different color and you have to tell them the letter, She had him trace the letter. Plus he can match all the color no problem. They have had him do that at school. He has no problem at all with his speech. He talks very well. He can tell me yellow and orange pretty so that is a good start but I have to give him hints with the other ones.

hm... that's interesting. i would take him to his regular doctor (obviously just whenever you can get an appt--not an emergent situation), and tell him/her about it. i'd ask them who to take it to next. or, maybe ask at the preschool and see if they have a resource. as i said, it kind of seems like more of a cognitive thing (recognizing and understanding) if he is able to see color and speak the words.

so.... if you said 'green' to him, he could repeat it? and so on for the other colors beside orange and yellow? if he can say/repeat them, then obviously it's not a speech thing. so, i'd look into someone else. but i'm not exactly sure who that would be...
