Just a thought but I'd like to hear yours

Here is a little back story, my fiance and I seperated 6 months ago after 3 years. Our son is going to be 2 in February and I am currently pregnant, and going to be induced a few days after the 7th of February. When we seperated I lost my home, job, and family and have since moved back in with my parents and have gone back to finish school. Unfortunately my home life here with my parents is not ideal. My mom is addicted to prescription medication and other drugs and because of that they suffer financially, needless to say we are barely making it. Thankfully for me my grandmother is incredibly supportive and has been helping me in my time of trouble because I have not been able to work this pregnancy due to some medical issues.
Tonight I got to thinking.. and I was considering possibly joining the airforce. As many of you may know you can not do so being a single mother, so I considered speaking with my grandmother to see if she would legally adopt them so I can join. I plan on keeping them with me with the exception of training, deployments, ect.
It would be terrible to be away from my children but it would provide me with a career, the money to continue my education, and the medical my children will need in less time than it would take me to complete years of schooling and start a career.
I just want to know if as a single parent anyone else would consider doing this? Or opinions on this?

The first thing I thought while reading it was "What if the grandmother passes and the ex-fiance gets handed the kids because of it?"
I think that would be my first concern, and look into that first.

From what I was told she doesn't have to adopt them you just sign over temporary guardianship and the AF will make you do a parenting plan for when you deploy and are in training

What other options do you have?

I'm a single parent and no i would not do this. Parenting is a job in itself, a roof over your head is important of course, but i believe my child needs a mother to raise him more than he needs me to be in school or earning a high wage whilst he's young. They need their primary attachment figure for healthy development and for that person to go away for long periods would not be something i would readily chose to do, ever. Ever.

Everyone parents differently though and only you are in your position to know what all your options are.

Couldn't you live with your grandmother instead of your mother? Is your ex financially supporting the children?

Have you considered a career in law enforcement? Or perhaps look into the Coast Guard.

That is what I am hoping for but I have heard other wise too, so I don't want to get my hopes up until I can talk to a recruiter for sure.

Not a lot, nothing really to be completely honest.

I whole heartedly agree and if I felt I had a lot of other options I would not consider it. I could live with my grandmother but it would require my grandfather putting off retirement and them supporting me and the children financially until I am healed and able to get onto my feet. & No, he had been helping us financially until he was laid off.

I am a single mother of soon to be two, and no, I'd never consider that. I worked hard at pursuing a work at home customer service job until I landed one so I can work safely up until i'm in labor and go back to work within 2 weeks.
