That's what I thought, but I could be wrong.

It does. Because the copper is toxic to sperm. So it kills it as soon as it's in the cervix.

In any case, it's still able to attach if it's a strong sperm thus why anyone could get pregnant on it, I'd assume.

I thought I was two months ago, had it two years, never a weird or late period then BAM, 9 days late, bloating, tender breasts, weird mid month spotting. I would have sworn on a stack of bibles I was pregnant. But I wasn't, period finally showed but symptoms were slow to follow. Thought I might have been pregnant but miscarrying, never even got the faintest line of a pregnancy test. I have labeled the whole charade under "Body went bat smurf crazy".

It makes it more difficult but doesn't fully prevent it. Paraguards main job is to act as a foreign object which causes your body to flush itself in attemps to get rid of it.

That's so weird to me, I never heard of it working like that and I've had it for almost 5 years.

How It Works:

The ParaGard IUD helps to prevent sperm from joining with an egg by interfering with the movement of the sperm toward the egg. It is also believed that the ParaGard IUD causes changes in the lining of the uterus to reduce the likelihood of implantation. ParaGuard provides pregnancy prevention immediately after it is inserted.

you would still get a positive pregnancy test in that case though, HCG is produced at soon as the egg is fertilized especially with todays sensitive tests. that wouldn't explain a missed period with a negative test. I don't think that's the way it works except as a last ditch effort, it's primary function it to keep the sperm from reaching the egg.

I am VERY interested in Paragard....

And you have had it 5yrs and no problems? Do you have to use a 2nd backup of protection for the first 2 wks like you do with pills?

I have had mine for 2 years with only one little scare. And I'm 99% sure it was delayed because I was SO sick.

And no. It's an immediate thing. Because there are no hormones that need to be absorbed into your body.

Though you might wanna wait a few days anyway because it's a little uncomfortable at first and most people spot or bleed.

I know MOST girls also have heavy periods like I do on the Paragard and A LOT of pain in and around my period happening. Horrible cramps during period. Lots of spotting for a couple of weeks after period. Yes, it's been better than the pill, but all BC has its cons and THIS is a big one. Also loosing hair like NUTS since being on the Paragard. Weird tingling feelings in my leg..

Do you take any vitamins to help it? Maybe prenatal vitamins would help.
