CIO

It really upsets me that the Mayo Clinic website suggests to let your newborn CIO. Such bad advice. They even suggest taking a shower to get away from the crynig. Newborns should not cry it out.

Do you have a link? From you saying they're suggesting taking a shower to get away it sounds more like they're saying not to be afraid to leave them for a little if you need a break.

Ugh thats awful

I mean if it gets to the point where you're losing it, it's okay for a few minutes IMO. But to let a NEWB CIO for the length of a shower is insane.

Like to walk outside for 2 mins for a breather is fine, but a shower? SMH

This!

CIO is a sleep training method, or a method used to teach a child that being ignored during the day is okay. Basically, the goal is the teach the child something.
If a mother is stressed, she should let the baby cry while she showers, it's for the baby's safety. It's not CIO in that situation.

Luckily I never got frustrated to that extreme till DD was about 10 months old. But when I got flustered, I put her in her crib and stepped outside for a minute. It was acutally the night we picked DH up from his bus after deployment and had a 3 hour drive home. She didn't nap that day and we got home LATE.

When I just read the article, it sounded like a last resort type thing.

I bet that's why it's on the end of the list.
They should have specified an appropriate age to do the CIO

Yeah it could be easily misconstrued to mean start doing it day one.

Exactly, they start the article saying newborn, and discussing newborn things then move on to calling it a baby and discussing CIO. They really need to clarify.

A few nights ago we had to go for a very long drive. We were about 30 min from home and pulled over for a bathroom break and I made sure the baby was all good , Then we got back on the road for the last leg of our drive.

Then about 15 min from home the baby started screaming! We could not pull over it would not have been safe.

My SO was driving and I was doing EVERYTHING I could to try and cheer up the baby. But he just kept crying! We were so sad that he was crying like this and we could not pull over and comfort him.

I knew we had a gas station coming up that was about 10 min from home. We did not want to stop because that would make it longer until we got home. But there was no way would could let the baby keep crying.

When we pulled over to comfort him and let him get out of his car seat for a few min we started talking about how long he had cried. We sad that it must have been the longest we had ever let him cry with out picking him up.... it was about 5-8 min. And it was so heart breaking for us. It made us think about people who use CIO. It made us so sad that people still use CIO. This made me know how it would sound to just let a baby cry. I can not believe that people do this. It very much disgusts me
