If you "found" God....
posted 25th Jan
What brought you to that point? If you were previously agnostic/atheist what brought you to believing?
What would you say your religion is now? Why is it?
If you feel too embarassed to talk about it openly, please PM me.

I don't know if you would call it God but I have recently found an inner peace. My girl friend and I started attending a small Unitarian Universalist church (I'm talking no more than 50 members) and the pastor there is Buddhist and she has taught us some excellent meditations. I still consider myself agnostic but I'm really enjoying meeting people of all different religious backgrounds and spiritualities and learning from them. There are Christians there, Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, atheists, agnostics... it's really awesome.

A life threatening situation pushed me in the direction of god. I was put on many prayer lists through churches of family and friends and a hospital chaplain came to my bedside many times to pray for/with me. It influenced me to pray more. I dont go to church however.

That sounds very fascinating. I like the idea of not conforming to just one religion.

I wouldn't say that I found God but rather that God found me. I was a teenager and really at a bad point in my life. Was into self mutilation pretty bad, felt like I had no real friends, family life was bad...but I always knew there was a God and that he cared about me because I was raised going to a Christian church.
Either way, God put a few people in my path that brought me to a church where I was able to really learn about the greatness of God that I always wondered about. HE changed my whole life when I was baptized with the Spirit of Christ.
I am Apostolic. If you have any questions you can PM

I'm a hellenic polytheist.
It started out as a joke to piss off smurf Christians, but the more I said it the more right it felt. I've always been obsessed with everything Greek, and the more I learned about the religion and.way of life, the stronger I could feel the gods.

I had kind of a light and fluffy" relationship" with "God" when I was younger but it never went anywhere.
I got married, and then started to get interested in God. I looked for a church, found one, and started to go. I made the decision to really get to know who He was. It was only a few weeks later we had our miscarriage. I felt that I had to make a choice. Either God was still good, or He never was. I knew I couldn't do it half-way, ya know? So, I just made the choice that I was in it for the long haul. I've been a christian now since 2007, and He's changed my heart in many many ways.

I went from Agnostic, to religious (Christianity) and right now I am studying Wicca.
Even as a kid I always questioned the existence. It didn't stop me from going to church though. It was mainly curiosity, and my parents were supportive of my desire to go.
When I had my first born, it was within that year I decided to focus more on religion. It wasn't long before I broke away from the church, and even after I moved, I tried going back, but suddenly nothing seemed right. All my questions about it arose once again, but it was more logical thinking rather than questions.
As I started looking more into Wicca, I learned that Wicca supported a lot of the beliefs I have always had (Even as a child). From the thoughts of Mother nature, all the way to reincarnation. I have put my studying Wicca aside lately. (I want to be able to properly commit to this religion, so I want to wait until I have the things I need for worship).

Oh it's an amazing community of people. Their version of Sunday school is called Religious Exploration. The children actually choose what religion (or lack of) they want to pursue and learn about.

I like that. Having a choice is pretty important with religious/spiritual growth I think.
I mainly ask the question in the OP because I have panic attacks that are attached to the idea of the after life. It scares me to think there is nothing, but also that there could be this "forever". Like it scares me so bad my Mother had to give me some of her Lorazapem to keep me from hurting myself during my panic attacks.
So I think I really need to find my spiritual path, but I've yet to find anything that made me feel "safe".

Cynthia (pastor at the UU church) taught us a Buddhist meditation that, if done regularly, can completely eliminate fear of death and accept it as a natural part of life. I had to stop mid-way because it was just so overwhelming. She warned us that it can be very tolling on the body.
Basically, you envision your death. You plan your funeral. You imagine who will be there, what they will say at your eulogy, down to the last details. You ask yourself, did I completely everything I wanted to before I died? If no, you contemplate ways to achieve your goals before death, an inevitable fate for all of us. You envision yourself slipping peacefully into an endless sleep, and at that point... "truth" about the afterlife is supposed to overwhelm you, whatever that truth may be. She said the truth is different for all of us.

Did she specify on anything about what the "truth" was?

I'm a Celtic Reconstructionist/Polytheist.
I felt a really strong pull towards the ancient Celtic (mainly Scottish and Irish) cultures growing up hearing myths and legends from my grandparents.
Once I got older and started researching more, I finally felt at home...

i was raised in a christian household. i went to church off and on as a kid. i dont agree with the verison of christianity that i was raised in.i had some smurfed up things happen in my life , me and god werent on good terms for a while. but after a few years we got to talking again. i believe theres a god, i dont believe in the bible or saints. this part of klustersmurf by tech n9ne pretty much sums up everything.
"Talk about growin up smurfed up, I grew up with a mentally ill mother, so it's no wonder that I'm slightly askew,
Her fanatical religious views had me sittin in pews 8 days a week, and because of that me and God didn't speak for a while,
Now I crack a smile when asked my religious preference,
I utter a Tech N9ne reference replyin, I'm a KLUSTERSmUrf,
I mixed up all the stuff religion that had to offer, boiled it in my cauldron till the bullsmurf burned off it,
All that was left was love, I can't say I always rise above the trivial smurf in my life cause I don't,
Sometimes my ego won't allow me to walk away, if you know what I'm sayin,
I've done a lot of drugs, smurf, I've done a lot of thugs, but in the end,
As long as I'm aligned with love, I KNOW I'm livin righteous"
