Even when I was a kid the parents were notified when a student was in the room with the principle- they usually had the kids tell the parents themselves.

Quoting Cassie♥:" like i said no one was expecting physical force... maybe threatening to call the cops or his parents or something? saying oh your making a bad choice does nothing... and he is a kid."

Didn't he leave b/c they were in the process of calling his parents? Or just about to?

And you said this happened on the school bus, which I am assuming is at the beginning of school....I imagine he's not the only child who attends this school and from the sounds of it, they were working as quickly as they could, the mornings are extremely hectic at most schools.

Either way, I hope he turns up soon and that he's alright, but I'd personally pass the blame on the child himself and the parents, not the school system.

It is not okay to leave your kids in the care of a public school and let them go off campus. from the sounds of what the secretery said, he didnt sound "that" determined... he heard he was being expelled and left and now the BOY has been missing for 24 hours. Something should of been done he was in the care of the school... period. No one has to use physical force but they could of called the cops or something. and calling the parents 40 minutes after he was caught with weed is not justifyable, who knows how long it took them to call the parents after he actually left.

I do want to say that I hope he is found okay. Hopefully he just went to a friend's house or something for some space.

yes it did happen on the bus... which the bus gets there at 8 and the parents were called at 9.10... I don't doubt its a busy time but it still doesn't change the fact that the parents should of been contacted first thing. And from my understanding they told him he was going to be expelled and he basically said well theres no reason to be here, then left.

I understand you are possibly angry and you are scared, but most schools would have done something very similar or security would have atleast chased him ( if they have it)
I do hope he is found safe, hopefully he is just being a turd and hiding

well, i do hope he is okay and found soon. but i don't think the school is at fault.

40 or 50 minutes might seem like a long time to you, but when you're in that situation in the morning with w million other things going on in the office and parents and kids coming and going and phones ringing and stuff, calling a parent 40 minutes later isn't really that long of a time period.

What time does school start? And you also have factor in the bus driver reporting to the principle or whoever was in the office and the fact that they are dealing with a very young minor who happens to have an illegal drug on him (don't get me wrong, I'm all for marijuana, but not for children using it, especially at 12).....12 year olds usually don't come to school with weed, so they probably needed to discuss how they were going to deal with that and they probably held off calling the police b/c they wanted a chance to talk to the parents first, if they called the cops as soon as he left then he'd probably end up in a lot more trouble then just being expelled.

I'm suddenly really glad for our small town schools here!

Here, if a kid in middle school were to be caught with drugs, the parents and police would have been called immediatly - no 40 min wait regardless of how busy it was! Hell, they called my cousin when they found her 12 yr old had brought Extra Strength Tylenol to school!

And here, they would have physically restrained (as in grabbing him and blocking him in a room) and would have kept him that way waiting for police. And they would have been allowed. We know because it's happened with that same kid and that was just over something minor and then he tried to leave. And the one time he did get out, she was called by the secertary AS the principal was running out the door after him.

Quoting Cassie♥:" My 12 year old cousin got in trouble on the school bus yesterday, somewhere in the process they found ... [snip!] ... When the parents talked to the principal all he said was "we cant restrain the children, but when he shows up he is expelled""

As a teacher, I cant physically restrain a student. That opens me up to litigation even if the above situation happened. Id be calling the parents ASAP. It sucks that the school couldnt do anything but mainly only security can restrain a child. Because then if anything happens to the child we can get in trouble if we accidentally harm them while trying to keep them safe.

Hopefully he is found safe, but all I know is Id never restrain a child... I wouldnt want to be fired over that.
