Group B strep....

posted 25th Jan
My friends sister had a baby in December. Throughout the pregnancy she found out she had group B strep. I don't know a lot about it, but I had it with my middle child, and all I know is when I went into labour I got hooked up to an IV straight away for antibiotics.
Well anyways when my friends sister went into labour (I just found this out yesterday) they didn't put her on an IV. They asked her while she was halfway through labour if she had it, which she said yes. They never hooked her up for antibiotics, and it got passed on to the baby.
Now the baby has spent almost a month in hospital with problems with his internal organs   and apparently has an internal bleed somewhere, but they let him home about a week ago.

As I mentioned, I don't know a lot about GBS, but can't the hospital get into some serious trouble for not giving her the antibiotics? And why would they send him home if he has an internal bleed?

So they asked and did nothing? Yeah, I'd be thinking about a lawsuit.

what the hell? they didn't test her for it? they are suppose to do it with every pregnancy... i had it 3 times.. but i had c-sections so i didn't need meds. i'm thinking she needs to contact a lawyer asap.

They did test her she told the hospital she was positive and they still didnt give her meds. According to the OP

I don't know much about it either, I never tested positive in my previous pregnancies but I was told at my last appointment that I'm positive for it this time and if my water breaks before my c-section that both the baby and I will be put on antibiotics.
It sounds like that is what they are supposed to do in all situations and they should have while she was in labor.
Was her OB there? They should have already known that without having to ask.
She should make some phone calls and try to find out what happened, her child is suffering from their mistake.

That's what I told my friend yesterday when she was telling me about it. And she just shrugged her shoulders at me.....like WTF!!

Yes they did test her for it, and even asked her during labour. And still did nothing.

That's the exact same thing I said. When I had it with my 2nd pregnancy I didn't have to say anything about it. I actually asked them why I was getting the IV and they told me it was due to the GBS.

Major malpractice. They should be paying for the childs medical care and needs at the very least. She really should consult with a lawyer.

Yea I'm going to talk to her about it again today. Or better yet, try and talk to her sister.
