Pacifier Breaking: How long did it take?

posted 25th Jan
My son is 20 months old and we took away the pacifier last week cold turkey. We did it last friday so that we could start over the weekend. It actually wasn't that bad.. whining a few minutes before sleep, but no tantrums. He went back to the babysitter monday and ever since then, it has been hell. I'll have to stand and hold him for 3+ hours while he has a meltdown before he goes to sleep. Did anyone's LO get worse over time before they got better? I'm just thinking the babysitter is giving him a pacifier behind my back. I don't want to accuse her of something she isn't doing, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

My DD was the same age, and it only took a couple days. Occasionally, she would ask and I'd tell her they were all gone, and she'd be fine.

As far as the babysitter, you could always just ask her if she has given it to him, and if so, just reiterate how important it is to you that he no longer be given one. It never hurts to ask :-)

I'll ask her how he does at nap time without it every day when I pick him up, and she says "Oh, he did fine!"

SO, idk what to do about that situation.

Only a day or two with my older two, they were about 14 months. I thought my son would fight me but he didn't seem to care. My youngest refused the paci so it was never an issue with her.

First off, throw out every single pacifier in your home. Out of sight, out of mind. Second, ask the sitter if she's been giving him a pacifier. Or you can always remind her "remember, he's not using a pacifier anymore". Does the sitter have access to any pacifiers? If so, Ross them out. Just incase she is giving him one. If he goes to her when she's baby sitting, ask her nicely to toss them all so he doesn't happen to see one and want one.

It could be because he’s now having to break it with two different people?

I know when my sister in law was getting her daughter off the bottle her baby sitter didn’t have an issue but my niece would cry for one at her house.

All the pacifiers at my house are out. But his babysitter also keeps other kids who still take the pacifiers, so she does have them there. I ask every single day how he does without the pacifier, and she tells me he did good. But bedtime is getting worse and worse. Could it be because he SEES the pacifiers at daycare?

That could be it! It will take time. Does he have a favorite blanket or stuffed toy that comforts him? If not, try getting him a comfort stuffy (that's what we call DDs) or a blanket that he can snuggle with. That might be a good replacement from the pacifier.
