There are ways to dry meat.  

Ancients used to pound out all the juices of raw meat with a rock and then dry it in the sun. It stored perfectly.

ETA: Instead of making all these excuses, why not just admit that the eating of human flesh is a taboo to you and that you'd rather have you and your kids starve than to break the taboo?

I think the last time I read anything like that was in 5th grade when we went on a field trip to a mission.
