How often?

posted 25th Jan
My baby is 3 weeks and eats 3 oz a feeding but was curious on how to get him on a more regular schedule with it. I know there is advice on how many times a day a baby feeds but how far apart do you or did you feed them to get them on schedule?

I never scheduled my son. I fed on demand but he scheduled himself after a while.

You can't really schedule when a newborn eats. They eat when they're hungry. Forcing them into a schedule that young is pointless. They make their own schedules after some time.

Okay. First time mom and wasnt sure about it. Ha. I've just been told by family and friends to do a schedule because they can get sick eating too often. But hes been fine so thought I'd ask. He eats as much as hes supposed to just not at the same times and people talked to me like it was a huge deal. I figured its best to feed when they are hungry seeing how we eat when were hungry.

It's going to be a couple of months before the subject of schedule and baby will be together in the same sentence. Even then, it will be primarily the schedule *they* come up with, not what works for us unfortunately.   It takes about 2 months for them to start sleeping more than 2 to 4 hours in a row on average. That also depends on the baby. My middle baby was up every 2 hours until he was 10 months old. My youngest slept 8 hour stretches after the first 2 months. My oldest was somewhere in the middle of those 2.

Yea don't listen to them. Amount and time for eating is made by baby lol. You LO will eat when hungry and will eat until full. No schedule or overfeeding possible. Your little one won't get sick   They will just spit up what they don't need.

Hes already a good sleeper. Only wakes up twice a night to feed and be changed.   What are everyones thoughts on them sleeping through feedings like 4 to 5 hours? Let them sleep or wake them after so long? Ive been letting him sleep???

I don't wake up a sleeping baby unless there's a bomb threat and even then I'd have to think about it.   Seriously though, they wake up when they're hungry. Babies are built to get as much food/sleep as they need automatically. The only time them sleeping too much is an issue is when they're preemies or if they have some type of dietary issue/dehydration from some sort of sickness going on.

Never wake a sleeping baby. By 2 months old DS was sleeping 10 hrs a night. They make up for it while awake by eating more or more often
