If you breastfed and lost weight

posted 25th Jan
How did you do it?

Also, I have a history of eating disorders and other issues that have really messed with my body and metabolism, so I recently discovered that if I diet while breastfeeding, my metabolism simply stops and I actually gained three pounds. I found a great article that explained it, and I actually think that a great deal of my remaining weight may be "maternal stores" but I don't believe there's any chance that ALL of it is. So any experience losing weight while breastfeeding would be helpful. I did lose 30 pounds after DD was born, but still have more ( a lot more) to lose. Tia!

How old is your baby?
I lost too much weight whilst bfing (65 lbs i think), it releases toxins into your breastmilk

If you aren't having enough cals then your body stores all it gets into fat, that's why some people don't lose weight when they try to diet whilst nursing.

Very very slowly. I used babyfit.com (currently using again) as it has free articles, recipes, workouts, and food trackers specifically for breastfeeding and postpartum. It is also a sister site of sparkpeople which promotes life change versus just a diet.

It is healthy to lose 1/2 to 1 pound per week when breastfeeding, and about 2 pounds per week not breastfeeding. With breastfeeding have to add in 500 calories too. .

I just got on baby fit. I think I like it, it's where I found the article that really explains what's going on with me

I didn't diet, at all. I ate VERY healthy, but I ate more than I would have not-breastfeeding. I basically treated myself as if I were still pregnant.

It doesn't fall off over night, it's a slow weightloss. But that is the healthiest kind.

I also have a history of eating disorders that have smurfed up my metabolism. Any real dieting with calorie counting and whatnot, and it comes to a screeching halt. So, instead of dieting, when trying to lose weight, I eat VERY healthy foods and work out extra hard.

Yeah I really like both babyfit and sparkpeople though with us keep having babies I keep sticking to babyfit lol. I love the articles and the spark points is kind of a fun thing.

I'm clk891 on there if you ever want a friend on there. I eventually have to lose 50 pounds so I'll be there for a while.

It's so frustrating, I wish I had realized earlier in life that people's warnings about eating disorders weren't just lip service!

Me too, it's so so frustrating. I have a friend that can literally just cut 200 calories a day and drop weight like it's nothing. If I did that, I'd GAIN!

That's what happened to me. I just cut what I thought was extra and I gained three pounds even though my BMI probably puts me in the morbidly obese category.

So does mine. Morbidly obese at a size 8. Yeah, it's the biggest I've been in my life, but...morbidly obese?? Yeah...I don't put much stock into BMI

I also wish I would have listened to people about the side effects of an eating disorder. I now have HORRIBLE metabolism and have to work so hard to lose anything!

i had an ed for 7ish years....for some strange reason, BF'ing helped speed my metabolism up... by 5 months PP, I had lost all the weight I had gained while pregnant (50 lbs).
by a year PP, I was 10 lbs below my pre-preg weight. I could eat anything I wanted and couldnt gain weight. as soon as I stopped BF'ing, that 10 lbs came back. i miss BF'ing and being able to eat anything I wanted! sigh

i definitely think it's because i didn't "diet" while I bf'ed.. if you restrict your calories when breastfeeding, i think for some people that can make your body think you're in starvation mode and actually hold onto fat.

how long have you been breastfeeding?
