I'm shocked at the number of family members who would have a problem..What year aare we in??? anybody in my family who is racist or homophobic will have zero to do with me or my children....I will cut them out completely

Most of it is conservative people who are set in their ways. Just kinda like how people are against gay/lesbian relationships. My dad was born in 1950, my mom in 62. Some people were just brought up that way. You're right, it is a very different time, so hopefully in 20-30 years when my kids are older, things will be different..

Some people are just set in their ways, especially older people. I don't know if you've heard of the "brown paper bag" days but black people use to (actually still do) discriminate amongst each other. Back when she was growing up, if you weren't the same shade or lighter than a brown paper bag, you weren't good enough. She still thought that way up until the day she died.

zero excuse..My grandparents were brought up to be racists...doesn't mean they were...My grandmother didn't even meet a black person til she was an adult...still not racist as an adult..or homophobic...but things will never be different because people excuse racism and being homophobic because "that's how they were raised"

Oh yeah, those jim crow laws. Smh. Kinda weird to think that my mother and father were alive at that time. My dad was old enough to understand but my mom was just a toddler.

That's what I was thinking!! We had (now passed away) one grandmother that was very racist and wouldn't hold her black great grand babies. But she really wasn't grandmother material to begin with and no one in our family really liked her.
My family would NEVER blink an eye about the color of skin I would date. They would maybe ask heritage questions but NEVER in a judgmental way. This blows my mind. I would cut people out of my life so fast.

This honestly makes me SO happy I'm from Oregon. We just have to deal with discrimination so much less. It's not completely gone but I definitely live in a very progressive community and I'm very thankful for that!

but it doesn't have to be that way if people quit making excuses for such terrible things..that's my only point...I met a guy one time who asked if I had ever been with a black guy because he won't date girls who have...It's just the way he was raised right? no...completely unacceptable and I would have been just as guilty of his racist mind set if I chose to continue talking to him...there should be zero tolerance for that kinda behavior but so many people accept it and excuse it

I don't think she was making excuses. I saw it as her giving reasoning and the reasoning isn't far off. Sure, people can be raised by racists and not become that way but truth is, most of the time, ignorance breeds ignorance. Racism is a learned behavior.

I'd cut out my own mother or father for being racist or homophobic...but luckily for me my family is not like that at all and very colorful lol

I get what you're saying, but you have to realize that's how some people are. Look, I was raised by a semi-racist father and my mother just doesn't want her kids to be with a black man (don't know her reasons), and I am the most open-minded person you'll ever meet. I do not care who anyone is with, I accept everyone for who they are. Religion, Racism, Sexual Orientation, etc.. are all such controversial topics, that there is never going to be a time where we are all 100% united. I just don't believe there will ever be complete unity, at least not while I'm alive.

trust me I understand that's how people are...I just don't understand how people who aren't racists continue to make excuses for those who are or even continue to have them in their lives...
