Would this bother you?

Okay, so you work. While you go to work, you drop your kid off with your SO's mom. She takes good care of your kid, there's no worries. She's a very religious woman. She knows you're not at all, but you two have a decent relationship to where you both respect each other. Religious backgrounds and....er...lack of.

Anyway, you get ready to pick up your kid and you hear music in the back room. It's Christian music, but not that kind of music where it mentions God a few times and that's that. It's the "I love to be a Christian, Jesus Christ loves everyone" with a bunch of really lame kids singing it. Like that's all they say. Over and over. Not only that, but your MIL's youngest daughter is singing and dancing to it..and your kid is trying really hard to grasp the words she is saying.

Would that bother you? If you're Atheist would that bother you? If you're not Atheist, imagine it the other way around and your kid was listening to music that was teaching your child that your God is not real. Would that bother you?

Yea...I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm sure we'll go over religion when LO is older...but it really did bother me. Not like anger me or anything...just bothered me.

Imagining it from MY perspective- I wouldn't really be bothered by it, because as a Christian, I have to hear stuff that denounces God all the time, it's everywhere I look. Hearing and seeing opposing ideas and views are unavoidable unless you live on an island somewhere lol. Christian children have to see the worlds influence all the time, and honestly, I don't think it phases them that much, it never did for me growing up.

So no, I wouldn't be bothered if my daughter was being raised without those beliefs, but heard that kind of music. Really, everyone has to deal with things in life they don't care for or don't necessarily believe...so I think it's important to raise children from an early age seeing all sides of things. It's not going to hurt her, just as it hasn't hurt my christian child in seeing non-christian things every day. I wouldn't be too upset over it....it's only music.

That's a tough one.
If she was just playing the music while my kid was there, it'd probably irk me but I wouldn't say anything.
If she was actually sitting my kid down preaching and teach Christianity and God, that would piss me off. Its no ones business but mine and my child's father to teach them things like that, and as an atheist I obviously would not appreciate that, just like if I were Christian I wouldn't want someone telling my kid God isn't real.

Yea. I think the reason it doesn't bother me is because I'm more worried about fighting the kids' dad's dad with him calling Cylus evil for playing in freaking snow on the way to my mom's car.

I would be upset I hate when MIL does that. She doesn't like that DH and I don't believe, but she tries to shove religion and God down our throats. It annoys me because she does it even when she knows that we don't like it. It's fine if she believes but don't force it on my impressionable son.

My kids LOVE kids listening to kids singing. Most of those cd's are Christian. And yes, I am Christian but the kids don't understand what it's saying anyway. If it really bothers you, signing time has some neat kids CDs with adults and kids singing and I have a feeling your MIL might like them too. Just if you wanted to spend the money and give it to her as an alternative? But, it wouldn't bother me. We listen to all music and for awhile there DS was telling his very religious grandma to "shake it for me girl".

The question is, does it bother YOU? My SO is a non believer and I am Christian, but we respect each other and our beliefs. My parents let me chose my faith, they never forced me to go to church, nor did they discourage it. I don't know how old LO is but at that age they don't understand religion at all anyway, they're innocent in their play and just want to do what the big kids are doing, I wouldn't make an issue out of it

It would piss me off simply because its like she's forcing her beliefs on your LO. There's nothing wrong with branching out music wise but if all its saying over & over is smurf like 'I love jesus' then i'd mention that it bothered me. Me personally, I am wiccan. That doesn't mean my son has to be. SOs family knows I'm not christian(they assume I'm an atheist)so when they gave me cards & baby wishes over half of them said 'We hope he follows jesus' or 'May he develop a strong relationship with god' I don't intend to force any beliefs into my kids mind but that's just me.

I would be upset. I'd prefer my kids to learn religion when they are older when they can form opinions by themselves without any influence. And in my case, I definitely wouldn't want either of their grandmas to teach religion to them

Yeah, honestly, it'd bother me.

I have a very negative opinion of religion and my mother knows that. It'd be like she was intentionally trying to push my buttons.

I mean, if my kid is hearing it, he'll be asking questions---I don't want those questioned answered by a christian.
