That's what a lot of countries do. They require you to serve a certain amount of time in the military once you turn 18. You don't always get called up right at 18, but you serve before you hit a certain age. Everybody in the country does it. So they're never without able bodies and the majority of the adults there are equipped to fight if they ever needed it. Like unofficial reserves.

Yeah, I dunno either. Like I said, I know jack about military stuff. I'm not feeling the draft though, for anyone.

Military stuff is unappealing to me, I'd definitely skip the country at 18 if I were going to have to join the military.

I'm all for it. As long as she can pull the same weight as a man doing the same job, she should be able to be on the front lines doing what a man would be doing. If that is the case though, then women need to sign up for the draft as well, since they make men do it. I disagree with the draft, but that's a debate for another time and place I think.

On the hygiene note, doesn't your period stop with certain birth control pills, or don't you just take them continuously in order to not have a period? Couldn't a female soldier be prescribed those pills and be instructed on how to stop her period for the length of time as her mission?

I've heard a lot of good things about it, and I can see the benefit. But, me being a liberal conspiracy theorist at heart, I don't know if I could dedicate that much to the gov't, as much as I love the smurfs.

That's an interesting aspect of the hygiene thing I never thought of. But I think the problem there might lie with some people not being able to tolerate that type of BC.

I wonder if they would have choice or not to be in the front.

Then those people would unfortunately be more than likely unable to do the missions. Which would suck, but like some men who have to take some medications to get by in the military and can't take them on missions or they would be too much of an inconvenience, they would have to deal.

How does that Diva cup thing work? Isn't it more sanitary than tampons, and make less mess? Wouldn't that also be a way to get around the sanitation thing?

Men don't always have that option. It comes with the job you sign up for, the chance that you will be on the front lines.

I'm in favor of women having the same opportunity. If they can do the same as the men, fine. Some women will compete better than some men.
I am NOT in favor of different standards. If Duane has to do X and Y in Z time, so does Jane.
I suppose they will have to reevaluate the requirements for certain job descriptions. For instance, a combat pilot would have lesser physical requirments that the people on the ground who are kicking in doors.
If these parameters arent done already, i suppose this will keep a lot of people busy with paperwork for a long time.

I know I'm late to the discussion, but I do have some points to throw in here.

I'm in the Air Force and I think it's great that they are allowing women in combat. However, I don't think that any 'ole woman will do. I believe that the women who want to enter combat should be able to perform at the same level of the men in that combat speciality.

Yes, women have easier standards for our PT test, that is true. This physical fitness standard is accross the board in the Air Force. I'm not aware of the combat speciality standards for men or women, but I would assume that they would hold the women to the same strict standards.

As for hygiene, we learned in basic to clean ourselves with baby wipes (a lot faster than the showers). We learned tips and tricks to be able to still remain clean with little to no showers (baby wipes and powders).

For sexual attraction, I will tell you that sex happens on the front lines and deployments no matter what. What about the gay men? Wouldn't they be distracted by other men on the front lines? I'm sure it's happened. Women would be a distraction, but they are charged as well with no sexual conduct. Genreal order one in deployed locations: No sex, no drinking, no sexually explicit materials. Does it happen anyway, pretty darn sure.

I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it. Like others have said already, the main concern is equal PT requirements, but I think that should be in place whether or not women are allowed on the front lines. Another big concern is pregnancy. Are these women going to be forced to be on BC or commit to celibacy to keep from getting pregnant during their enlistments? I know a lot of guys try to get out of deployments in various ways, and I can only imagine how many women could/would chicken out and purposely get pregnant to avoid deployment--which of course would mean someone else has to go in her place.

And what about fighting in some of the Arab countries where women are looked down on? I wonder if that could present any issues, like if female soldiers were taking people into custody or whatever.

It will be interesting when we have high-profile, female POWs. The media will go crazy.
