Gestational Diabetes
posted 24th Jan
I have gestational diabetes and i'm 29 weeks. I have to prick my finger 4 times a day and write it down in a log book to show the doctor once a week at my appointment also I have to take insulin shots 2 times a day. My fasting number was were it was suppose to be and my hour after breakfast was were it is suppose to be but my hour after lunch spiked to 306. I had a piece of baked chicken, steamed broccoli and cauliflower, a small baked potato and 1/4 of a cup of apple sauce, which is close to what I usually have. I watch my carbs but not sure why it spiked like this and when I called the doctor the nurse told me to keep checking it like i'm suppose to and they will probably increase my insulin next week. But it's been two hours since I checked it and I wanted to see what it was reading now so I checked it again and it's back down to 90. Has anyone else had this problem?

When you got the 306 did you check it again right away? Maybe it was just a false reading.

It was probably the apple sauce and the potato.
Some people have spikes with most starchy foods.
Did they talk to you about glycemic index?

No I checked it about 2 hours laters. The only thing they have told me to do is watch my carb intake. That's first time it have ever been that high, it wasnt even that high when they did my glucose test.

Grrrr. I used to counsel women with GD. People with diabetes need more info and guidance than "watch your carbs" especially when on insulin.
If you do a search there is great info out there. Carbs aren't equal and some people have spikes with certain types of starchy foods.
Good luck to you and your baby.

I'm doing everything I can to keep it down. And even tho what I thought was good numbers apparently it wasn't. But thanks I'm ready for it to be over already.

Don't be hard on yourself. It takes a while to figure out what makes your sugar spike.
Yes, it will be nice after you have the baby, but consider GD a warning about your future. A high percentage of women with GD develop full-blown diabetes later in life. Sometimes it's months later and sometimes it's years.
So, do your best in managing your blood sugar now, and after the baby do all you can to get to a healthy weight and overall healthy lifestyle with exercise.
