What are your thoughts about it?

I think the US is seriously slacking on education especially in this area. We used to thrive on our farming and to do that the kids would not go to school during the summer to help with the family farming. That is not the case anymore. We need our kids in school year round.

I think it's a good idea... but I think the idea of improving the education they are receiving right now would be a better start than just extending the school year as a first step.

Our education system is really going down the smurffer, in many places.

I went to year round school growing up, not always, but for a few years. I LOVED it. It was the perfect amount of work vs time off, and my grades were so much better because I didn't feel overworked all the time. We also were able to plan family vacations so much better.

Agreed.

DS isn't old enough to be in school yet but he has a teacher come and help him catch up and work on his behavior issues. We have the option for summer therapy and I will be accepting it. I have a feeling he'd forget every single thing before I put him in preschool lol.

I'd like to have year round schooling. That way they don't have around 3 months of no school and forget almost everything they learned.

How year round is year round?

Over here, the school year looks like this:

Start first week of sept
One week break in late October
2week break from Friday before Christmas to first week of jan
One week break late feb
2 weeks break around Easter
One week break in late may
Then end school the last week of July, start all over again in September.

I wouldn't mind as long as they're gettin enough short mental breaks throughout te year. Kids lose so much over the summer. Especially the ones who's parents don't do smurf with them.

I think the quality of education needs to be improved before they increase the quantity of it. If not it would literally be a waste.

Quality over quantity.

I think this has a lot to do with it's now not "acceptable" for anyone to tell a child they've failed at something, how everyone must be considered a winner no matter what and so on. If a child has nothing to strive to accomplish because it will be handed to them they give up trying because why work for something that will just be given.

Absolutely. It's fascinating the amount of blamet that's put on a teacher now for a child not doing what they're supposed to be damn doing.

You can bet if I get a call from the teacher that my child isn't doing their homework-- that's my child's responsibility, not the teacher's.

I also have a huge issue with standardized testing being the be-all end-all of "success".

I am a big fan of year round school. Kids get the same 180 days of school but with more frequent breaks and without two months of summer to forget things and get out of practice. Teachers are less burned out too. It's better for education all the way around IMO.
