Babbling

posted 24th Jan
How old were your babies when they started babbling with consonants?

DS is 7 months and only goes ba-ba-ba and goo-goo-ga-ga lol. He also loves screaming and blowing raspberries. He has a tongue tie which can cause speech problems but I opted not to get it clipped. Does he sound like he's on track?

DS1 has a severe speech delay so I'm totally paranoid.

Post and run. Putting him down for a nap which is a project lol.

He's completely on track! The official babbling stage is 6-12m, with crying and cooing before that.

Ah, good. I have a baby book and it's so strict. Like, he should be babbling by 5 months, crawling by 6 months, saying Mama at 7 months, walking by 8 months.....I think I should just chuck this book out the window lol.

No, burn it so someone else doesn't find it!!

I did an in-depth study into child language acquisition last year, I'm about to do a 10 week investigation into an aspect of it, and I'm about to enter the speech therapy field. You can trust me

Good, I do trust you. I know every child is different so 6-12m range makes more sense. This book and his pedi made it out like he was suddenly supposed to start babbling and talking.

No way! Why are people in such a rush to get babies doing everything?!
My DD was JUST starting to babble consonants at that age, baba and goo goo is just fine. She said her first word at 1yr, then stopped, then her language slowly started developing at 17m, then exploded at around 19-20m, and she is talking in full sentences at 2. All kids are different, he may walk at 9m and not speak until 3 and be totally normal. Is he working on crawling or sitting up right now? They often put one thing on the back burner while they perfect something else

I don't know. It's terribly sad. When I got pregnant I knew I was going to be taking care of an INFANT for a year. Not 3 months, not 6 months. He's right on track with everything else...he's actually going a bit fast for me, I feel like he was just a newborn lol.

My first said Mama at 8 months....and now at 3 1/2 he has the speech of a 24 month old. So I know babbling is not a very good indicator of speech lol.

He is trying sooo hard to crawl but right now he's just army crawling. He's also getting teeth.

I was surprised at how young my 2 year old is, if that makes sense? I was never around babies/toddlers so I just had no idea what each stage would be like!

It does. Because of DS1's delays I felt like I took care of an infant until he was 3 years old. Now that he's starting to catch up I have an actual infant to take care of lol but I feel like DS2 is developing so fast. I'm not used to it!
