I have the opposite problem as you... DD is five but missed the Aug 31 cutoff here by two and a half weeks. They wont let her in so she will turn 6 in kindergarten.

Well, most kids do start when they're 5 and turn 6 in kindergarten. I looked it up and a lot of states have the cutoff date at September 1st, so that kids have to be 5 before they enter kindergarten.

I would personally wait until the following school year. Our cut off is Sept 1 and my son is 5 on July 1, so he'll start this August.
Hopefully, he will do alright since he's been in pre-k since 3. I'm so dreading 'big school.'

We are debating the same thing. My sons bday is oct 9, and the cut off here is the 15th so he made it by 6 days

My DD is the youngest in her class and she is the only one in her class that doesn't get in trouble on a regular basis. I had one note the whole year about her turning around and talking to someone in class, but when I talked to her about it she swears it was just because the little girl wouldn't leave her alone and her teacher wouldn't do anything about it when she raised her hand.

If you send him, next year could you hold him back if he doesn't seem ready for first grade and have him repeat kindergarten?

I think it depends on the child - my youngest will most likely be going in while when he's 4 (almost 5) my oldest will have just turned 6 when he goes next year to kindergarten.

EVERY teacher I have talked to though says that they wish parents would hold the kids back until amost 6 before they start.

I started kindy at 3. My son is starting in September at 4 (5 in January), BUT we're holding him back a year (so to speak) so he'll have two years of kindy just like back home.

I don't think sending him is all that big of a deal unless you feel like he isn't ready. It sounds like he is though. Here the cut off is Sept 1st and my son's birthday is in August. I never considered not sending him to be honest.
