Introducing baby to family dog...

posted 23rd Jan
Did anyone have to take precautions while bringing baby home to a family dog? We have a dog, almost a year old and is very protective over us and our home. He will bite strangers. I was wondering if he'll recognize baby as one of his family too? Maybe it smells like me/us? Don't tell me to get rid of my dog***

I have heard if you bring in one of the babies blankets first and let the dog sniff it and just pet the dog while they do it helps.

Before you take baby home have someone take a blanket or something Baby was in for the dog to smell.

Bring in a piece of clothing or a blanket that smells like the baby first. Let them sniff it.. We did that and then brought the baby in. But my dogs aren't aggressive with kids. One of my dogs is aggressive with adults she doesn't know, but not kids...

Someone suggested earlier on this site to have your SO or a family member to take a blanket with the baby's scent on it to the house before hand to get the pet to recognize it. Seems like a good idea.

What kind of dog is he or she? When I introduced my boys to our english bulldog, we had the them in their carseats and let him sniff them... then we kept him outside the living room gate just to watch and get use to the baby sounds and smell... you can continuously reintroduce him to the baby as the baby gets bigger... he should then learn to recognize him or her as a family member and to protect the baby. Don't seem nervous though cause the dog might pick that sense up.... praise him for smelling and show that the baby is a good thing

I've always put him in his kennel when children are around because I don't want to even chance that! However, with DH's friends... He'll bite (ones he's never met before). I'll try the blanket thing. Sounds like it should work. I may talk to a dog trainer and maybe they will know things to try as we'll..

He's a mountain feist. Sounds vicious, but he's not and he's not large.. About the size of a beagle or other hound dog. I may try the blanket thing, then sit the carseat down and have him on a leash so that if he does, for some odd reason, get aggressive I can jerk him back. I don't feel like it would be a problem considering it will be so small and not threatening in his eyes. Like with dogs smaller than him, he doesn't pay attention to. Dogs bigger, he is more aggressive to (if they are strangers and are near his territory). So since the baby will be so much smaller, he won't see it as something to worry about.

this is what we did. every day SO went home to take care of the dogs, he would take one of kimberlee's blankets she had been wrapped up in for them to smell.
i didn't think we'd have any issues with introducing her to them at all, but we did it as a precaution just in case. she came home without incident and they were all very careful and gentle around her.

my dog was super protective and I worried what she would be like, but she ended up standing between my baby and anyone who came near her. She nipped at a couple people for getting too close.

Awww. When SO was a baby, his parents had two Dobermans that wouldn't let anyone, including his parents, get near him. They actually had to get rid of them because of it... But still a little sweet!

We had to find her a home because we had nowhere for her to live. I hate myself everyday because of it. She is such a good dog. But now she has a home and a yard and 2 dogs to play with. She's happy.
