ADD dx in kindergarten?

posted 23rd Jan
My son is 5, he started kindergarten this past fall. He had previously completed two years of pre-k & had been in daycare from six weeks old before that. He has always been a very active and distracted child, but we never really thought much of it. His pre-k teacher both mentioned it, but we all just chalked it up to his age. Now it is becoming a HUGE problem. He has trouble finishing his schoolwork on a daily basis. While the other kids are doing work, mostly quietly...my son will twirl in his chair, play with his pencils/crayons as if they are cars or make random noises. He has recently started drawing on himself, or running around the classroom. He's fallen behind to the point that they're discussing holding him back. His teacher mentioned to us that she believes he may have add. It's something other teachers have previously mentioned so we went ahead and scheduled an appt.

His doctor already gave us the Conners scale, his teacher filled her part out & so have we. The day we turned it in his doctor's office called us right away to schedule a follow up. He was originally supposed to see his doctor about 3 weeks ago, but I got sick and have been in & out of the hospital since. His new appt is on February 4th. Until then...things are just getting worse with him at school. He has started coming home with write ups for his disruptive behavior & we received a notice of failure. At this point, I feel like an awful mom. Like I'm failing my baby.   Has anyone else dealt with a situation similar to this with their kinder aged child? What can I expect after the Conners results?

I wouldn't let them start him on meds or anything at the moment. My oldest daughter's K teacher tried the same thing, and she was so smart and was finishing her work so fast, she was bored. When she got to 1st grade(and a different school) her teacher then recognized the boredom and gave her extra stuff to do, like going to the library for research and such.

Do you restrict his diet at all? With children who have ADD, they need a high protein breakfast. Avoid things with additives and dyes, as those tend to enhance ADD behavior. I'd try that to see if you get any improvement btw now and his next visit. Basically look at the glycemic index and avoid things that are high.

Yup...

Dean was diagnosed this year after a whole year of what u have explained, and worse, he was 1st diagnosed with adhd, and disruptive behaviour disorder, then a month later it got bumped up to odd, he's on meds now 5mg of adderall only after being kicked out of a private school after only 1 month

My cousin had adhd and really bad, he's going to be 25, and since he was about 4 my aunt used to give him coffee, it levels them out, u can tell when he hasn't had his coffee, he starts yapping real loud and humps the air, he's very obnoxoius but awkwardly funny at the same time lol,
My aunt didn't want to medicate him, so she just did the coffee thing and that works for him besides when he smokes weed...

My son isn't finishing any work at all... As for medication, we will discuss that when the time comes. I know some kids are okay once on medication but others not so much. We will keep our options open until we find something that works for him.

sounds like my husband!   he must drink coffee and he smokes weed, but his parents did go the drugs route and put him on adderall for like 6 years or something!!!! and he was on some other pills too and he to this day is soooo very much against prescription drugs for kids. It sent him down a wrong path. ALL kids are HYPER! some need more atention then others! thius is why we are homeschooling. Drugs are not the answer. kids develop at different speeds and this stupid gov schooling system just puts all kids in categories!

He's a really picky eater as is, but I'll look up diet changes and give it a try. We're willing to try anything to help him. He used to love school, not so much now...   Thank you!

I'm going through the same thing right now just waiting on the doctor to call us back. My son also has a very hard time focusing and is very behind because of it. We all three had to fill out the surveys and he has to see a child psychologist.

Wow, that's intense. Aiden is just getting worse. I feel so bad. I don't want him to be labeled as the bad kid because of this.

Well I have Dean on meds and he's improved a lot, it was taking 3 hours to do homework, that now takes him 20 mins if that, he was always above avg. In class then went to having to be tutored in everything including math and phonics which are his strongest subjects, now on meds he's actually helping other kids correct their mistakes which is something his principal and teacher put in his 504 plan, that he be given oppertunity to have leadership role, and mentor other students,

My cousin, can figure stuff out, he can barely hold down a job and the coffee and weed thing barely helps him be tolerable,

Also look into omega 3 (EPA&DHA) supplements, helps with concentration and brain development in general. They sell gummies for kids, no fishy taste or anything.

Thank you for your reply. Sorry you're going through this too. t's so hard to see them struggle.

My husband & I don't mind if he has to be held back to catch up, we don't want him moving up and always being behind. We don't want him held back in kindergarten though, because in our school district none of the resources are available until first grade and up. We would much rather him be held back in first grade so he can at least get the help he needs.
