Hooked on Phonics

posted 23rd Jan
Have you ever gotten your kids Hooked on Phonics? If so what do you think of it? Did it help a lot? Was it worth getting? Have you used anything that you think is better? I was just thinking about getting it for my oldest son. What age to kids normally use this? My son is 4.

If u want a phonics program go with zoophonics. This is what I used with my dd and what I have used in my preschool program for 4 years now. It has shown immense success. My dd was reading halfway through prek. They also use it in er kindergarten class. So it can grow with the child. You don't need the whole kit unless you have the $ for it. I just Hve the large cards and I scanned them in my computer and print any actives I want to do. So I have a magnet board matching game, a fishing game, a dice game, I have all the beanie babies and they all have a name tag I made, and I can make any random idea that I come up with. Ten maybe buy the DVD they have. I've never watched it but I would assume it teaches you how to introduce them. If not I can give very detailed explanation of how i do it. But the motions and a little description of Each animal is on every card. but I've adapted a little more detailed explanation for some of them. Now that's he's in kindergarten I buy her the leveled reading books to read. She loves them. She still loves the zoo friends. And it really helps build her reading confidence.

I will definitely have to look into that! Tax time is here, so maybe I will buy the kit depending.

She is ADHD, but we think she may have aspergers like her dad, she is also ODD and may have SPD. But no Dr's in my city will test her, they said it wouldnt make a difference on what she has by putting a name on it, cause it wont just make her better...so for now since the Dr wont refer her, I have to save up 2500 to get her in to get evaluated and then the second evaluation is 1800 and there is a third at 1800 as well.

Oh wow! That is crazy that her doctor won't refer her. Best of luck with all of that!

$38 for that is great. On the teacher site the flash cards are $50 something (buy u get uppercase too). If you can do a lot of printing this ones good because all the mini books and activities are printables. But the quick start DVD itself is usually like $15 i think. So the kit already paid for itself.

If u don't like to make your own projects and don't want to print all that stuff and could afford it I'd splurge for the $198 pack. But you'd really have to be committed to utilizing the materials and not be wushu washy about teaching him otherwise yod just waste your $, ya know? But that kit comes with a LOT of nice stuff. I'd buy it for my kids for sure if I hadn't made those things myself. I do wish I had the mini books though. But if you're crafty you can make all those activities, like the magne board(which I make myself with magnet printer paper from staples and a cookie sheet) and the bingo game, and the the smaller pack has the printable mini books you can make yourself, I personally don't do worksheets or coloring pages, but tht use those in DDs kindergarten class and she likes them. She does the worksheets for homework a lot and they make the little paper bag puppets at school.

Will he go to kindergarten next yr or prek?

Well he is in preschool right now...But he doesn't turn 5 'till November 4th...after school starts so I think he will be in preschool again? Not sure how that works.
