Mirena

Hey ladies, I'm just curious to know what your experiences with Mirena have been (if you've had it). I've heard great things and terrible things, so it seems to go both ways. For myself, it was basically the only option offered by my OBGYN (had surgery for a fibroid tumor on Dec.18th and had it placed then). So far I think its been great, however I still haven't had a period (last was Dec.4th) and I've yet to be able to feel the string (either can my husband)....although I had an u/s on Dec.20th and it said it's placed correctly. Is this normal? Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled I'm no longer bleeding to death, but I just figured I'd have some sort of spotting or something by now.

So, pretty much, how was it for you? How were your cycles? Did your mood change? Gain/lose weight? etc. etc.

I had it for 3 years and Never had a period.

I loved it at first. But then I started getting the worst hot flashes, I used to sit in front of an air conditioner and be sweating for no reason. I cannot seem to lose any weight with it. I am always on my period, I get it about 2-3 times a month, which is the opposite of it "stopping." Also I now have the worst cramps ever with Mirena, and with me always being on my period, I am always feeling hungry, even though I don't eat when I get the munchies from my period, it's ridiculous.

But every woman is different and has different symptoms. My experience with it has been awful so far.

How long did you have it before your issues started?

I had a fibroid tumour which caused extreme cramps, very long irregular cycles, and "oh my god I just lost half my blood supply" bleeding.......so I can see where you're coming from. I'd honestly hang myself if it starts all over again b/c my only other option is a hysterectomy which I'm not okay with

Lol I loved it for the first year and a half. Then I started having terrible side effects. My vagina would swell up from it. And my sex drive went down hill big time. And I gained about 10 pounds. Which wasn't to bad. I weigh 123 and I'm 5'5. So I look healthy lol. But I ended up getting it taken out early due to the problems. I also hated how many pregnancy scares because I never had a period lol. And a good friend of mine got pregnant on it.

my period is still regular, but lighter. no weight gain or anything else. i have had mine since july.

Ohhh geez....well swollen vagina and an additional 10lbs I can live with, but no sex drive....that may be a deal breaker for me, lol. I'm still in the early days and I guess my biggest fear is that most of the side effects I've heard about take a good 6-12 months to appear.

And I can see the pregnancy scare thing being an issue, I'm so used to bleeding to death every month that the last few weeks have me questioning things, plus not being able to feel this string that I'm apparently supposed to find does not help, lol

I have it and so far I LOVE IT!!!! March will be 1 yr. I had a tiny scare like a week ago I could see my string but went and it was just a lil long not out of place... THANK GOD!!!!

I wanna say maybe 3 months into it. Also to agree with the other girl, I lost my sex drive altogether. I honestly can't even get horny anymore, I know TMI but I've heard that can be from the Mirena. My boyfriend and I used to have sex all the time and my sex drive was crazy, now nothing. Like at all, and it's kind of ruining my relationship because he is so sexually frustrated but doesn't wanna have sex because I don't enjoy it or get excited anymore. :\

Although now I'm a lil confused....you can SEE your string?? Cuz I can't even find mine....and I sent my hubby on a hunt for it a few times without any luck too, lol

  I don't want to hear this.....so far my sex drive has remained the same, but its early days.....I really, really hope that's not one of my side effects but it's honestly one that I've heard quite often

You may not be able to find it because it may have done what mine did and wrap around the side of your cervix. It's supposed to curl up to each side, but mine curled to one side. I can't ever find mine either, but I've had it checked a few times.

Whew, I'm hoping so, I've been so nervous about that but my u/s came back saying it was in place, plus I have a follow up appointment on Feb.4th so I'm sure she'll go looking. I was nervous b/c I read in the pamphlet to be careful with tampons b/c you might also yank the string....thankfully I haven't needed them yet, but i wanted to be prepared when I do and hope I'm not yanking everything out with them, lol.

P.S. Thanks a ton for your responses, I've googled this quite a bit but it's always great to hear one on one experiences. Two of my girlfriends also have the Mirena but they are both convinced that they have different ones than I do b/c apparently the packaging on them were different and they were both told they would have regular periods, where I was told mine would eventually stop....theirs came in small boxes and mine came in a massive box. I honestly didn't think they had different kinds, so I'm planning to ask my doc. about it when I see her.

I don't think you'd have to worry about pulling the wrong string because the Mirena string is only 3cm long and should not reach the opening of your vagina where the tampon sits. I've been wearing tampons since I got my first period on it, and I've have no problems with them.
