Preschool For 3 Years?

posted 22nd Jan
From my previous post:
"So, back in October, we took DS to have his autism eval. The psychologist and developmental pedi both stated that DS does have autism. So today, we met with his regular pedi (she is a big advocate for special needs children, her adult daughter is autistic). It was really a great meeting. Her nurse came in, and talked to me, she gave me a bunch of resources for DS , and myself. She said it is great we already have him in the school system. She also recommended we register with the Bureau of Developmental Disability Services, it could take several years to get on since there is a waiting list, but she said we should go ahead and do it. She also said that since DS is not potty trained (he is 3) to check with our insurance because sometimes insurance companies will cover the cost of pull ups if the child has special needs. Which, I thought was pretty awesome since those things are expensive! The pedi also said she believes DS is very high functioning , but also has expressive language disorder. I am also thinking about going to a local support group every Thursday night for parents of children with special needs , its at a church really close to me, and they offer childcare during the meetings for $5. Overall, it was a really good meeting!"

The nurse also said that DS will be in preschool again next year, and probably the year after that? Does that seem right? 3 years of preschool?

If that's past the cut off, which it is here, then three years seems right. He won't be starting kindergarten until he's almost six.

If he is only 3 then yes, he would be in preschool for three years since he would turn 5 after the cutoff date to enter kindergarten

Is it a special Ed prek? It is typical for Children to go at 3&4. Then usually the special Ed teacher will evaluate Iep goals and kindergarten readiness and discuss with you whether or not a third year of prek is necessary. This is not something u can predict at age 3. But it is an option when the time
Comes to go to kindergarten. If you and the teacher discuss it and feel he needs another yr to get a little ahead for kindergarten that is one choice. Or you can take your chances with kindergarten and worst case scenario he repeats if he wasn't ready. That's a choice you would have to make. And it is YOUR decision at that time. If he is old enough for kindergarten and you choose to send him they cannot stop you. So just ride it out and see how he is when that time comes.

yes, he is in special education. thanks for the info! it doesnt matter to me if he goes 3 years, if thats what he needs, ya know? but the issue with him isnt intelligence, he is very intelligent. it is his expressive language disorder that mainly is holding him back

Most kiddos are in PPCD until five. Though it can depend on your school district. My school district use to leave them in until six if they needed to be in self-contained.

Yeah that's common. He could blossom in te next school year and be fine. But that's something you would want to wait until next spring to reevaluate. We have some parents that prefer their child repeat kindergarten and skme that want them to repeat prek so they start kindergarten at a good level. It's too hard to decide at 3 how he's gonna be at 5. But that's something you'd want to discuss at the end of the end of the year before kindergarten age with his therapists to see what their recommendations are too. You could also go through kindergarten round up and I'd you choose prek then just don't send him to kindergarten. But if you do choose kindergarten he'd be all set.

Oh so he's already gonna have to go the next two school years anyway. Hopefully he'll be good and ready for kindergarten by then   and if not he may even get an extra year if need be. But most likely hell be fine by the time he's old enough anyway
