breast feeding

posted 22nd Jan
iv been breast feeding since iv had her on 1-11-13 & now for some reason my breast doesnt want to produce enough milk like it did b4 and she is only 11 days old. she has been eating from my breast but iv also been pumping them alot more than her eating from them. Can that cause it to stop? Do i breast feed her more instead of pumping and it should produce more again?

yes you could try to breastfeed her more than pump. some pumps dont work as well as a nursing baby so it can decrease your supply some. (if you have cheapy pump especially)

I didnt know pumps could actually do that cuz i thought its pretty much the same bcuz your gettn milk out of your breast both ways through the pump and her breast feeding.

Pumping does not stimulate milk production as well as baby nursing so yes you should put her to your breast as often as possible. She is also goin to be going through a growth spurt around now which will cause her to want to feed more and be fussy anyway which may make you think you're not producing enough. This isn't true, it's called cluster feeding and it's nature way of making baby help your body to increase supply to accommodate her growth. Just strictly nurse (no bottles no pumping) for a while and get her to your breast as often as you can. Avoiding actual skin to skin, mouth to nipple nursing sessions will hurt your supply. Also, the baby's mouth and saliva coming into contact with your nipple is how you body knows what antibodies it needs to make for baby.

What makes you think your supply is going down!? Having her on your breast more will keep up yoyr production.

Pumping is not going to accurately let you know if you are producing. She is going to hit a growth spurt that will make it look like you aren't producing enough. But you more than likely are. Have you tried a breast feeding support group? I went to one they my hospital and another one through a natural baby store. Just keep putting baby to the breast and you should be fine. The first few weeks are the hardest. Once you get past them it gets easier!

Feed off you first. You produce more as baby is actually on the breast. Drink plenty of fluids (pee should be almost clear). Eat healthy if you can. And avoid pumping til a later time. If you can get a lactation consultant that can help you too.
